Box Score Rohnert Park, Calif. – In a game that saw seven ties and nine lead changes, U-Mary's
Kelsey Peltier scored the game winning basket with 28 seconds remaining as the Marauders held on for a 68-65 win over Sonoma State University.
U-Mary (2-1) was led by the all-around performance of
Shaunna Knife. Knife had game-highs in points (20), rebounds (10), assists (6) and blocks (5). The senior forward recorded her third consecutive double-double to start the season and the ninth of her career.
Elizabeth Day paced the Seawolves (0-1) with 13 points, eight rebounds and two steals. Day's five offensive rebounds helped Sonoma State hold a 17-8 advantage in second chance points.
With 9:21 remaining the first half Peltier gave the Marauders a 22-19 lead. Back and forth until that point, Peltier's three-point field goal allowed U-Mary to go on a run. The Marauder's 17-6 run was capped off by another Peltier three point basket to open the gap to 11. With just 2:12 left in the half it looked like U-Mary had a chance to go into the half with a double-digit lead, but a 6-0 run by SSU put the game at 36-31 going into the half.
Kaitlyn Haag came up big for the Marauders in the first half by scoring 10 of her 16 points in the opening period.
Early in the second half Haag added two more points with a pair of free throws to give U-Mary a 41-33 lead. The Seawolves were able to claw their way back into the game as they tied it at 44-44. Nearly three minutes went by before either team was able to score.
Taylor Luke hit a pair of free throw to allow the Marauders to retake the lead. Three lead changes later and Knife hit a lay-up to give U-Mary the lead at 51-50.
Two lay-ups by
Ali Collins fueled a 10-0 Marauders run to give them a 59-50 lead with 5:40 to go in the game and forced the Seawolves to call a timeout.
Sonoma State responded out of the timeout scoring five unanswered to bring the game within four. Just two minutes and 37 seconds after being down by nine and at the brink of allowing the Marauders to cruise to victory, a three pointer by the Seawolves' Krista Fahey gave them the lead at 64-63.
A jumper by Knife and a free throw by Sonoma State tied the game at 65-65 with 1:20 remaining. With 28 seconds remaining Collins fed Peltier for a lay-up that proved to be the game-winning basket.
U-Mary added a free throw from
Laura Petersen and SSU had a chance to tie the game, but Knife blocked the Seawolves' three-point attempt to seal the victory.
Sonoma State took advantage of U-Mary's 19 turnovers by holding a 22-13 advantage in points off of turnovers. The Marauders were able to overcome their mistakes by outshooting the Seawolves 46 to 34 percent.
Collins had eight points and nine rebounds on the night and Haag added six rebounds to go with her 16 points.
Peltier finished with eight points.
U-Mary will be back in action on Monday as they take on California Maritime Academy.
