Balanced Attack Propels Marauders Past Peacocks

Box Score Bismarck, ND – A balanced offensive attack pared with a dominating defensive effort carried the University of Mary women's basketball team to a 73-53 win over Upper Iowa University. Five different Marauders reached double figures in points as U-Mary extended its winning streak to five games.

Earlier in the day the Marauders received votes in the USA Today ESPN Division II Top 25 Coaches' Poll. U-Mary then went out and proved worthy of the recognition, winning its fifth straight game to remain tied for second in the Northern Sun. The win streak is the team's longest since early in the 2008-09 season.

U-Mary's Ali Collins hit a three point basket to open the scoring and Laura Terhark would respond with a trey of her own on Upper Iowa's first shot of the day. What looked promising for the Peacocks proved short-lived as Upper Iowa proceeded to miss its next 11 shots.

A relentless rebounding effort by the Peacocks kept Upper Iowa (0-11 overall, 0-7 NSIC) in the game early before a 12-2 run built a 27-14 advantage for the Marauders. U-Mary (9-3, 6-2) would maintain a double digit lead the remainder of the game.

Shaunna Knife led the Marauders with 14 points and nine rebounds. The junior forward hit three treys and added two blocks and two steals. Laura Petersen contributed 13 points and four assists. Collins had 10 points and four assists.

McKenzie Foster and Kaitlyn Haag both scored 12 points off the bench. Foster was 4-of-5 behind the arc and added two steals. Haag was 6-of-8 from the field and snared nine rebounds.

Jeri Jacobson led Upper Iowa with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Ashlee Bailey added 10.

The Marauders smothered the Peacocks offense as Upper Iowa made a miniscule 23.9 per cent of its shots.

The Marauders continue their four-game home stand against MSU Moorhead on Saturday, January 7. Tipoff is set for 2 PM.
