Box Score Bismarck, ND – The University of Mary extended its win streak to four games and the Marauders remain tied for second in the Northern Sun women's basketball standings after defeating Winona State University 64-55.
Ali Collins scored 15 points and
Kaitlyn Haag added 14 to pace the U-Mary effort.
Trailing by three to a shorthanded Warriors (7-5 overall, 2-4 NSIC) squad, the Marauders (8-3, 5-2) opened the second half on fire. Behind two treys from
Kayla Schmidt, U-Mary went on a 12-2 run to claim a 39-32 lead.
Despite playing without three starters, including leading scorer Michelle McDonald, Winona State would battle back to take a one-point lead. U-Mary's superior depth would soon take over and the Marauders would outscore the Warriors 18-7. Much of the damage came from Haag, who scored 10 points during the Marauders final push.
Behind a great effort at the free throw line, the U-Mary lead would eventually grow to as many as 11 points. The Marauders made 10 of 11 free throws in the final 5:11 and finished 20-of-22 for the day. The Warriors finished 8-of-9 at the line.
In addition to her team-leading 15 points, Collins also led the Marauders with seven rebounds and five assists. She was 5-of-7 from the field. Haag made 5-of-6 shots, added five rebounds and two blocks. Schmidt and
McKenzie Foster both had two treys and eight points.
Abby Busch led the Warriors with a game-high 18 points and Katie Wolff added 17 off the bench.
U-Mary played a strong defensive game, holding Winona State to a 37.9 per cent shooting effort. The Marauders knocked down 44.4 per cent of their shots.
