Box Score Duluth, MN - For the second straight game, the University of Mary defeated a team at the top of the Northern Sun women's basketball standings. Less than a week after upsetting then 4th-ranked Wayne State College, the Marauders went on the road to defeat the University of Minnesota Duluth 73-67.
Sophomore forward Kaitlyn Haag came off the bench to score a team-high 16 points, one of five Marauders to hit double figures in the game.
The Marauders built a double digit lead in the second half, leading by as many as 12 points, used clutch free throw shooting in the final minute to hold the Bulldogs at bay.
A 10-2 run by the Bulldogs pulled UMD to within 66-65 with 1:12 left in the game. Laura Petersen would respond with a layup to push the Marauders lead back to three points with 60 seconds remaining. Ali Collins would then steal the ball. Subsequently fouled, Collins went to the line and knocked down two free throws with 30 seconds on the clock.
UMD had a chance to cut the deficit on its next possession but Maria Almquist would miss two free throws. Kayla Schmidt pulled down the defensive rebound on the second miss to give U-Mary possession. Lindsey Sand then went to the line and hit two free throws with 22 seconds left to build the Marauders lead to 72-65 and seal the win.
One of the leading rebounders in the NSIC, Haag had four rebounds to go with her 16 points. The sophomore forward went 6-of-8 from the field and made 4-of-5 free throw attempts.
Linda Murray also had a strong night on the inside. The junior forward was 6-of-9 from the field, scoring 14 points, blocking two shots and recording a team-high eight rebounds. Collins scored 13 points, dished six assists and had three steals. Petersen chipped in 11 points and Schmidt had 10 points and five rebounds.
Shelly Stemper led UMD with 20 points and nine rebounds. Courtney Doucette had 14 points and Katrina Newman added 10 points and nine boards.
Behind the efforts of Haag and Murray, the Marauders shot 50 per cent from the field. Clutch at the line, U-Mary was 24-of-29 on free throws. Defensively, U-Mary held a 39-30 edge in rebounds and limited UMD to a 36.1 field goal percentage.
U-Mary improves to 6-3 overall and 3-2 in the NSIC. UMD is also 6-3 and 3-2.
The Marauders next face Bemidji State on Saturday, December 17.
