Murray, Marauders Dominate Boards in Upset of #4 Wildcats

Box Score Bismarck, ND - A dominating defensive performance and a spectacular power game by Linda Murray propelled the University of Mary to a major 72-64 upset over the nation's fourth-ranked team, Wayne State College. The Marauders held a 48-31 rebounding edge and Murray posted 20 points and 14 rebounds.

This was the highest ranked NCAA Division II team the Marauders have defeated. The last win over a ranked opponent was a January 23, 2010 victory over #20 Concordia University.

Trailing by one point late in the first, the Marauders (5-3 overall, 2-2 NSIC) scored six straight points to close out the half. Kaitlyn Haag hit a layup to put the Marauders ahead and followed with two free throws. Kayla Schmidt added two more free throws and U-Mary led 31-26 at intermission.

Wayne State (9-1, 3-1) hit the first basket of the second half but the Marauders would post 16 of the next 18 points to build a 47-30 lead. Kayla Schmidt hit a three and Murray followed with a layup to start the run. After All-American Ashley Arlen scored inside for the Wildcats, Shaunna Knife would knock down a three. Murray followed with another layup and Schmidt dropped in another trey. U-Mary's run would end on a free throw by Murray and a jumper by Laura Petersen.

While the Wildcats would cut into the Marauders lead, Wayne State failed to cut its deficit to single digits until just 22 seconds remained in the game.

The win over Wayne State was a complete reversal for U-Mary from its loss to Augustana the night before. The Vikings defeated the Marauders by 28 points and Augie held a 15 rebound advantage on the glass.

Murray led all players with 20 points and 14 rebounds. She was 9-of-15 from the field and added two blocks. It was the third double double for the junior forward this season as she set season highs in points and rebounds.

Knife added 16 points and six rebounds. Schmidt knocked down four treys and scored 14 points. She also posted seven boards. Taylor Luke came off the bench to score five points, pull down five rebounds, dish four assists and make three steals.

Arlen had 14 points, nine rebounds and five blocks for the Wildcats but made just 2-of-10 field goal attempts.

Neither team shot well from the field. The Marauders made 37.7 per cent of their shots and made seven treys. The Wildcats shot 37.3 per cent and three treys.

U-Mary's big advantage was in rebounding, especially on the offensive glass. The Marauders had 19 offensive rebounds to four for the Wildcats.

The Marauders return to the road, next facing the University of Minnesota Duluth on Dec. 16.
