Bismarck, ND -
Nikola Nikolic and
Aaron Mc Elwee both had a goal and an assist and
Nate Ulness added a goal of his own as the University of Mary exploded for three second half goals to roll past Jamestown College 3-0 in the season final for the Marauders.
After a tightly played opening half during which both teams could generate just three shots apiece, the Marauders came alive after intermission. Providing the spark was Nikolic, a senior and one of six U-Mary student-athletes playing in his final game for the orange and blue.
On a long throw in by Ryan Buchholz, senior Jake Hawkins redirected the ball to Nikolic. Parallel to the ground, the native of Belgrade, Serbia, one-timed the ball at the six short side by the left post. His team-leading sixth goal of the season gave U-Mary a 1-0 lead 63:13 into the match.
U-Mary would seal the game on the first goal of the season by senior Nate Ulness in the 80th minute. Taking a beautiful diagonal cross by Mc Elwee from the left to the right on a dead sprint, the Bismarck, ND, native finished his run by striking short side between Jimmies keeper Thomas Cooke and the right post.
The final goal of the evening was another spectacular play. On a give and go he played back to Nikolic, Mc Elwee took the ball outside the penalty box, drove by a defender and beat Thomas one on one at 84:19. It was the freshman's fourth goal of the season.
Backed by Michael Frenzel in goal, the Marauders limited the Jimmies to nine shots with only three on frame. Frenzel made two saves and the team one to earn the shutout. The Marauders had 11 shots with six on goal.
U-Mary held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. The Jimmies committed 20 fouls to 12 for the Marauders.
In addition to Nikolic, Ulness and Hawkins, Andrew Newhouse, Chris Stier and Linus Onuoha also played their final match for the Marauders.
