In high school, Maish was a four-year letter winner in XC and a two-year letter winner in track and field. He was also a senior captain on his XC team his senior year. Maish qualified for the state XC meet his sophomore, junior, and senior year placing 145th, 93rd, and 69th. Maish is a graduate of Bemidji High School in his hometown of Bemidji, MN.
