BISMARCK, ND – The University of Mary softball team (10-18, 0-6 Northern Sun) fell in their home opener 8-0, 6-3 in a doubleheader to #23 Winona State University (27-4, 6-0 NSIC).
The Marauders return to the UMary softball field on Sunday, March 29, when they host Minnesota State University, Mankato at noon.
GAME 1 University of Mary 0 WSU 8 F/5
After being no-hit for the first two innings, the Warriors exploded for five runs in the top of the third to take a 5-0 lead. WSU would add two more runs in the fourth to make it a 7-0 ballgame.
Jianna Cota and Ariana Retuta opened the bottom of the fourth inning with back-to-back hits, but UMary would fail to bring either of them home.
The Warriors would score another run in the fifth inning. The Marauders would be unable to answer in the bottom of the fifth, as WSU would claim an 8-0 victory after five innings.
UMary recorded four hits and one walk, while WSU had eight hits and seven walks.

Francesca Villaneda went 1-for-1 with a walk
Kaitlyn McLaughlin went 1-for-2.
Jianna Cota went 1-for-2.
Ariana Retuta went 1-for-2.
GAME 2 University of Mary 3 WSU 6
The Warriors grabbed an early 3-0 lead at the top of the first inning. Kaitlyn McLaughlin's speed led to the Marauders scoring their first run of the day in the bottom of the first. McLaughlin led off the inning with an infield single and would advance to second on a passed ball. She then stole third and came home to score on a throwing error by the catcher.
WSU would add another run in the third inning and two in the sixth to take a 6-1 lead. UMary showed grit and rallied to score two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Bree Waldron smashed a double to left-center field to score Janelle Bergmann. Jenel Mallari then laced a single back up the middle to bring home Waldron. UMary would be unable to bring in another run as the game finished 6-3 in favor of WSU.
The Marauders posted six hits and no walks, while the Warriors had nine hits and two walks.

Kaitlyn McLaughlin 1-for-4 with one run scored and one steal.
