Box Score 2 WINONA, MN – A pair of premier starting pitching performances combined with booming bats carried to the University of Mary baseball team to a doubleheader sweep at Winona State University. The Marauders captured the opener 5-2 behind another impressive start by Lucus Burgum. UMary then extended its win streak to seven games with a 17-1 rout of Winona State to claim both Northern Sun games.
UMary's longest NCAA-era win streak is eight games, set in 2022. The Marauders have now won seven straight four times since joining the Northern Sun for the 2007. UMary last won seven straight games in 2024.
The Marauders (13-10 overall, 7-4 NSIC) and the Warriors (10-13, 5-6) wrap up the weekend with a doubleheader starting at 12 noon in Winona, MN. Game one is a 9-inning Northern Sun contest before the two teams conclude their day with a 7-inning non-conference game.
GAME 1: University of Mary 5 Winona State University 2
Lucas Burgum, the reigning Northern Sun Pitcher of the Week, threw another masterful game. For a second straight start, the Marauders righthander didn't allow an earned run while throwing a complete game. And for the second straight game, Burgum held the opposing lineup to just two hits.
Burgum struck out seven Warriors and walked two. He did not hit a batter.
The only runs scored by Winona State came in the seventh inning with two outs. Both were unearned due to a fielding error by Burgum.
In his last two outings, including a 5-1 complete game win over Southwest Minnesota State University, Burgum has allowed no earned runs, struck out 13, allowed four hits, walked three and hit one batter. In those two starts the only runs he allowed came in the first inning against the Mustangs and the seventh and final inning against the Warriors. In between he threw 12 straight scoreless innings.
Burgum's streak of not allowing an earned run jumped to 18 innings. The last earned runs he allowed came in the second inning at Metropolitan State University of Denver on March 13.
Hank Griffin provided an early spark for the Marauders. The UMary shortstop singled home runs in the first and the third innings to give the visitors an early 2-0 lead.
UMary put the game out of reach in the fifth inning.
Bryce Leafgren launched a solo home run over the left field wall before sacrifices flies by
Luke Rhee and
Kieran Gaffney pushed the Marauders advantage to 5-0.
Griffin knocked out a career-high four hits in the game. He drove in two runs, scored once and stole a base.
Leafgren finished 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and an RBI.
Marcus Butts doubled, scored, and went 2-for-4.
Kalem Haney reached base three times on a hit and two walks. He also stole a base.
The Marauders knocked out 12 hits to two for the Warriors.
GAME 2: UMary 17 Winona State 1
For a second straight start,
Aiden Johnson was dominant on the mound as UMary rolled past Winona State 17-1. The Marauders senior righthander shut down the Warriors attack in a 7-inning compete game as he limited the home team to three hits. He walked one and struck out five. The only run he allowed came on a solo home run in the seventh inning after the Marauders had scored the first 17 runs.
This was the second straight outing by Johnson where he held a team to one run in seven innings.
Four times in seven innings the Marauders posted multiple runs. After scoring twice in the first, UMary crossed the plate four times in the fourth, three times in the fifth and eight times in the sixth. The Marauders had 16 hits, earned seven walks and was struck with a pitch six times.
All-American
Isaac Pegors got the Marauders rolling in the first with a run-scoring double to score
Kalem Haney. Pegors then scored when
Luke Rhee walked with the bases loaded.
Pegors knocked home the first run in the fourth when he singled home Haney.
Bryce Leafgren followed with a run-scoring double before
Hank Griffin drove in two more runs with a single.
Haney finished the game 4-for-5 with a walk, scored four times and drove in one run. Pegors went 3-for-4 with a walk and a double, drove in three runs and scored three times. Leafgren drove in three runs and Rhee had two hits and two RBIs.
Kieran Gaffney scored twice and drove in two runs,
Andrew Linn scored twice and had an RBI, and
Mikey Ramirez finished with two hits, two runs scored and two RBIs.
