Box Score MINOT, ND – Starting with
Michael Fagerland and ending with
Cole Smith, eight University of Mary pitchers combined to shut out Minot State University 2-0 in a midweek non-conference contest between the two Northern Sun foes. The Marauders octet struck out 12 batters and allowed just three hits over nine innings.
In a game where the two Highway 83 rivals combined to send 17 players to the mound, Fagerland was the only pitcher to throw multiple innings. The redshirt freshman from Bismarck, ND, tossed three scoreless innings for UMary, striking out three while giving up two hits and a walk.
Ben Zehr followed with a scoreless fourth inning.
Jacob Burgess,
Kaden Coldwell and
Brody Wrench each threw two-thirds of an inning with both Coldwell and Wrench retiring both batters they faced.
The Marauders domination on the hill continued in the final third of the game.
Sam Hayen struck out two hitters in a perfect seventh and
Cullen Wilson struck out one in a scoreless eighth inning.
Smith struck out all three batters he faced in the ninth to earn his first save of the season.
Over the final four innings, only one Minot State hitter reached base, earning a walk in the eighth inning. The Beavers baserunner was immediately eliminated from the bases as the Marauders turned a double play.
The Marauders scratched out the only run they needed in the sixth. With two outs already on the board,
Marcus Butts singled and moved to second on a walk to
Mason Saint Hilarie. Hank Grifiin followed with a clutch single to right to score Butts.
UMary tacked on another run in the seventh.
Andrew Linn led off with an infield single up the middle, was sacrificed to second before taking third on a ground out. The UMary left fielder then scored on a wild pitch.
Linn, coming off a 3-hit game Saturday in a win over Southwest Minnesota State, finished with two hits against the Beavers. Griffin and Butts also had two hits for UMary. Butts also reached when he was hit by a pitch and Griffin added a stolen base.
The Marauders improve to 11-10 overall. The Beavers are 9-13.
UMary returns to NSIC play this weekend with a quartet of games at Winona State University on Saturday and Sunday, March 28-29, in Winona, MN. Saturday's doubleheader begins at 1:30 pm with Sunday starting at 12 noon. The first three games between the Marauders and the Warriors are Northern Sun contests.
