#10 Marauders open 4-game road trip Friday 118 miles north on Highway 83

THIS WEEK
On the road for the first time in 2026, the #10 University of Mary hockey team heads up Highway 83 to visit #2 Minot State University on Friday, January 9. The Midwest College Hockey clash between the Marauders and the Beavers is set for 7 pm at All Seasons Arena in Minot, ND.

THE RECORDS
UMary is 18-7-0-0-0-1 (W-L-OTL-T-SOW-SOL) overall, 15-7-0-0-0-1 against ACHA MD1 teams and 4-2-0-0-0-0 in MCH play (12 points). Additionally the Marauders are 11-7-0-0-0-0 when playing nationally ranked teams… Minot State is 17-1-1-0-0-1 overall.
 
HISTORY
Located 118 miles apart along Highway 83, the Marauders are 2-12-0-0-0-0 against the Beavers since moving to ACHA MD1 for the 2023-24 season… The two teams have split their two games this season. The Beavers won 5-1 at home Oct. 31 before the Marauders claimed a 2-1 win at home November 8. David Loahr tied the game with a second period goal. Amraj Gill delivered the game-winning goal with 90 seconds to play with a long shot from the right point. Caleb Cross made 38 saves for UMary.

LAST TIME OUT
The #10 Marauders returned from Christmas break with a sweep of North Carolina State. UMary scored three third period goals to win the opener 4-1. Derek Dropik snapped a 1-1 tie and David Loahr and Matt Scribner joined the UMary captain with 3rd period goals. The Marauders held a 50-20 lead in shots… In game two the Marauders scored four in the first period to down the Icepack 6-3. Dain Sardelli picked up the hat trick for UMary.
 
TIMING
First-year forward Dain Sardelli has had perfect timing, scoring the game-winning goal in six different games this season, a team-high. He was credited with the game-winner in victories over Lake Region State (9-1), Colorado (4-2), Purdue Northwest (3-1), at Jamestown (3-2) at Midland (4-1) and over North Carolina State (6-3), when he posted a hat trick with three goals. The only other UMary players with multiple game-winners is Isaac Flatley and Alex Senf with two each.
 
 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Alex Senf is havening a sensational second season at UMary. In the course of 26 games the 2nd year forward leads the Marauders with 16 goals and 28 points (16g 12a).
  • In his first season at UMary Dain Sardelli leads UMary with six game-winning goals. He is second on the team in goals (14) and points (28) and is third in assists (14).
  • The 2024-25 Midwest College Hockey Rookie of the Year and all-conference forward is having another impressive season. Joe Gronholz is second on the team in assists (18) and points (27). He has nine goals, including a team-best three power play goals. 
  • David Loahr has 11 goals already this season to go with 11 assists for 22 points. He scored six goals last year in 36 games, his first season at UMary.
  • Matt Scribner has been an offensive force for the Marauders on the blue line this season. He is 3rd on the team in assists (14) and has four goals. His 18 points is second among the Marauders blueliners and is eighth on the team.
  • Amraj Gill, in his first season at UMary, leads the Marauders defensive corps in points with 26. The team leader in assists with 21, Gill has scored five goals.
  • Isaac Flatley has also found success in his first season at UMary. The forward owns ten goals and 13 assists for 23 points.
  • Hunter Mangan owns nine goals and nine assists for 18 points. The second year forward has scored an even strength goal, on the power play and shorthanded, one of four Marauders who has done so.
 
NET GAINS
Zane Clausen and Caleb Cross, both in their second seasons at UMary, have split time in the net for the Marauders this season. Clausen has played in 11 games and owns a 5-3 record with a 2.83 goals against average and a .906 save percentage. Cross is 13-4 with a 2.28 GAA and a .927 save percentage... Cross earned the Marauders first shutout of the season with 34 saves in a 3-0 win at Midland… Combined the two UMary netminders have a 2.53 GAA and a 91.8 SV%.
 
MARAUDERS JUMP TO #10
The Marauders upward ascent continues as the University of Mary checks in at a season-best #10 in the 9th American Collegiate Hockey Association Men's Division 1 ranking of the season. UMary ranked 14th in the preseason poll and the first two rankings of the season. After four straight weeks at #12, the Marauders jumped up to #11 for two straight polls… The October 29 poll was the last coaches' ranking of the season. Computerized rankings started November 5 and continue into February. The computerized rankings determine the 18 squads who will join the six teams earning automatic qualifying bids to form the 24-team ACHA MD1 national championship tournament field and compete for the title in Centene, MO, in March.
 
BIG WINS
The Marauders earned the 250th win in program history November 22 in the 5-4 win over West Chester University of Pennsylvania… Following the Marauders sweep of North Carolina State, Head Coach Dan Huntley owns 257 coaching wins at UMary and 353 collegiate coaching wins overall.  
 
SHARE THE LOAD
Eighteen Marauders have scored goals this season and 16 have at least two goals. Additionally 21 Marauders have an assist.
 
NEW
On a veteran team with 21 returning players, four new skaters have taken to the ice this season for the Marauders: defensemen John Lang and Amraj Gill and forwards Dain Sardelli and Isaac Flatley. 
 
SPECIALTY UNITS
The Marauders have scored 18 goals on 89 power play opportunities (20.2%)… UMary has allowed opponents to score 17 times on 88 opportunities (80.7 penalty kill %)… UMary has a 7-1 edge in shorthanded goals. David Loahr has scored three times with the Marauders skating shorthanded and Hunter Mangan, Isaac Flatley, Joe Gronholz and Dain Sardelli each have one shorthanded goal. UMary hadn't allowed a shorthanded goal until December 3 in the 23rd game of the season.
 
THE JUG SERIES
After three games, the University of Jamestown leads the 2025-26 Jug Trophy best-of-5 series 2-1 over the University of Mary (UJ 4-0 win at UMary 11/1/25, UMary 3-2 win at UJ 12/3/25, UJ over visiting UMary 4-3 on 12/11/25, UMary at UJ 1/23/26, UJ at UMary 1/24/26).   
 
Located just 100 miles apart on I-94, the University of Mary and the University of Jamestown compete annually for a travelling trophy called simply "The Jug." The team that wins the yearly series of games claims possession of The Jug, which is a Bridgeman Russell Company Jug. UMary purchased the trophy and had "The Jug" painted and logoed. Each winning team is responsible for placing their institution's name and record in the series on "The Jug" each season.
 
The Jug series started in the 2024-25 season with the Jimmies claiming the title after winning 4-of-5 games. 
 
DOUBLING DOWN ON FLATLEYS
Levi Flatley, a forward from Virginia, MN, is joining the University of Mary hockey team at midyear. His brother Isaac began playing for the Marauders at the start of the 2025-26 season. Levi comes to UMary after playing for the Minnesota Wilderness of the NA3HL. In 26 games this season for the Wilderness Levi scored 12 goals and dished 18 assists for 30 points to lead the squad in all three categories.
 
SENF EQUALS SCORING MARK
Alex Senf tied the Marauders single game scoring record when he recorded four goals in the Marauders 13-3 win over Dakota College at Bottineau on December 13, 2025. He tallied twice in both the first and third periods. Send also had an assist and finished the game with five points… Tanner Eskro is the only other UMary to score four goals in one game. Establishing the record in an 8-1 UMary win over Lindenwood University on October 22, 2022. 
 
MARAUDERS PICKED 3RD IN MCH PRESEASON POLL
Midwest College Hockey coaches project the University of Mary to finish third this season in the seven-team league.
 
Defending league champion Minot State University tops the 2025-26 MCH Preseason Coaches' Poll, released September 24. The University of Jamestown is picked second, followed by UMary, Midland University, McKendree, Waldorf University and Iowa State University.
 
All seven teams will compete in the MCH conference tournament February 20-22 in Albert Lea, MN. The MCH Playoff champion will hoist the Lindsay Cup and earn a berth in the 2026 American Collegiate Hockey Association Men's Division 1 national championships set for March 12-17 in Maryland Heights, MO.
 
UMary opens its 12-game 2025-26 MCH schedule at Waldorf on Oct. 18-19 in Mason City, IA.
 
RANK AND FILE
In a schedule chock full of the top teams in the country, the Marauders play 27 games of their scheduled 38 contest against teams ranked in the Top 25 preseason poll. UMary faces #3 Minot State (5 games), #6 Jamestown (5), #9 Drury (2), #10 Utah (1), #11 Calvin (1), #15 Purdue-Northwestern (1), #18 Midland (4), #21 Arizona State (2), #21 Delaware (1), #23 Grand Valley State (1) and #25 Colorado (4).
 
2024-25 REWIND
The Marauders finished last season 23-15-0-0-0-0 overall and 22-15-0-0-0-0 against ACHA MD1 teams… Michael Heitkamp, a two-way defenseman from Grand Rapids, MN, in his second season with the Marauders and fourth overall in ACHA MD1, scored 15 goals and delivered 15 assists for 30 points to earn a spot on the 2024-25 ACHA MD1 All-Athletic 3rd team. Heitkamp is the first UMary player to claim ACHA MD1 All-Athletic Status... Heitkamp was also an All-Midwest College Hockey selection. Forward Joe Gronholz was the MCH Rookie of the Year and a 2nd team All-MCH choice. Defenseman Dylan Cunningham and Gronholz were both named to the MCH All-Rookie team.
 
HISTORY LESSON
UMary, which won back-to-back ACHA Men's Division II national championships in 2020 and 2021, made the move up to MD1 for the 2022-23 season. Head Coach Dan Huntley has directed the incredibly successful UMary program since the Marauders first took to the ice in September 2018. Over the course of seven seasons UMary has fashioned a record of 239-56-9-11-2-1 (W-L-OTL-T-SOW-SOL), posting a winning season with 20 or more wins each year.
 
The Marauders made their second straight MD1 national tournament last spring and went 1-1, defeating the University of Pittsburgh 4-0 in the opening round before falling to #3 Ohio University 3-0. Throughout program history covering six national tournaments, the Marauders are 14-2-1-0-0-0 (W-L-OTL-T-SOW-SOL) in ACHA tournament games and has only two losses in regulation.
