MANDAN, ND – A fast and furious first period elevated the #10 University of Mary hockey team to a 6-3 victory over North Carolina State University and a weekend sweep of the 2-game series.
Dain Sardelli, who posted his first hat trick at UMary, recorded bookend goals in the opening stanza as the Marauders scored four times.
UMary is 18-7-0-0-0-1 (W-L-OTL-T-SOW-SOL) overall and 15-7-0-0-0-1 against ACHA MD1 teams. NCSU slips to 13-7-1-0-1-0 overall.
The Marauder scored three times in the third period in Saturday's 4-1 win over the Icepack. UMary kept that energy going in the first period of Sunday's matinee.
Sardelli opened the scoring just 5:03 into the game. Carrying the puck through the right circle,
Isaac Flatley slid a pass through the crease to a wide open Sardelli stationed on the backside of the net for an easy tap-in.
Just 52 seconds later UMary doubled its lead to 2-0. Picking up a loose puck at the top of the slot,
Lucas Medeiros wristed a shot into the top left corner of the net.
Derek Dropik scored for the second straight game when he picked up a rebound and lifted a backhander into the left side of the net at 17:21.
Once again striking before the Icepack could shake off a goal, the Marauders scored a scant 23 seconds later. Picking up the puck in front of the UMary net, Sardelli raced end-to-end. Skating into the left circle, Sardelli moved towards the slot before rifling a shot low into the right side of the net to send the Marauders into intermission with a 4-0 lead.
Jack Ammons scored for the Icepack at 10:02 of the third period, ending a run of eight straight goals by the Marauders. Hunter Mangen scored 26 seconds later for UMary.
Sardelli capped the Marauders scoring with a power play goal at 15:11, giving the Hebron, ND, native his first UMary hat trick.
Dropik finished with a goal and an assist.
Amraj Gill had a pair of assists.
The Marauders held a 54-35 edge in shots.
Caleb Cross finished with 32 saves for UMary with Isaac Tawyer making 48 for NC State.
The Marauders open a 4-game road trip at #2 Minot State University on January 9 in a Midwest College Hockey game. UMary is next at home January 24 when #6 University of Jamestown visits the Starion Sports Complex Schwan Cadillac Rink in Mandan, ND.
