Slow start costs #10 Marauders in loss to #8 Panthers

CHESTERFIELD, MO – In a matchup between two nationally-ranked programs relocated three hours away from the original site due to facility issues, a slow start by the #10 University of Mary hockey team resulted in a 5-2 loss to #8 Drury University.

The Marauders are 3-2-0-0-0-0 (W-L-OTL-T-SOW-SOL) this season, with all five games against teams in the national rankings. The Panthers are 6-1-0-0-0-0.

Originally a 2-game series set for Springfield, MO, the Drury home rink lost the ability to freeze ice, which forced the cancellation of Friday's game and the relocation of Saturday's contest.

Drury jumped out to a quick advantage less than four minutes into the game on a goal by Jamison St Clair.

Dylan Cunningham drew the Marauders even at 11:59 when the UMary defenseman scored off an assist by Levi Flatley. It was Cunningham's third goal of the season.

Less than three minutes later the Panthers reclaimed the lead before scoring again at 18:02 to enter intermission with a 3-1 lead. Drury expanded its lead after scoring the only goal of the second period.

With the clock running out in the third period, Joe Gronholz found the net for the third time this year at 15:12 to close the UMary gap to 4-2. Despite a 15-8 shot advantage for the Marauders in the last period, the Marauders were unable to score again while Drury sealed its win with a goal at 17:16.

Neither team scored on the power play on two chances apiece. Drury held a slight 33-32 advantage in shots.

The Marauders return home to host #4 Minot State University at 7 pm on October 17 in the Teddy Bear Toss game. Fans are encouraged to bring a teddy bear to throw on the ice during the Marauders-Beavers game. In conjunction with the Bismarck Cancer Center Foundation, all teddy bears collected will be donated to cancer patients.
