For the first time this season the University of Mary men's basketball team faces a Northern Sun South Division opponent when the Marauders host Minnesota State University and St. Cloud State University on Friday and Saturday, January 9-10, at the McDowell Activity Center. The Marauders open the weekend with a 5:30 game Friday against the Mavericks. On Saturday, tip off between the Marauders and the Huskies is slated for 3:30 pm.

SOUTH TO NORTH
Crossover between the NSIC North and South divisions commences this weekend. In a 16-team league featuring two 8-team divisions, NSIC teams played their first eight conference games against teams in the same division. The next eight games are against teams in the opposite division. Schools close the season playing six intra-divisional games. (22-game NSIC schedule features two games against the other seven teams in your own division and one game against the eight teams in the other division). Â

LAST WEEK
The Marauders closed out 2025 with a New Year's Day matinee against Bismarck State College. In the first regular season game since the 1981-82 season, UMary rolled past visiting BSC 99-67 to win the Capitol City Clash.
Tshawn Bois led the Marauders with 19 points and ten rebounds for his first double double.
Noah Thomas hit four of the Marauders season-high 16 treys and scored 17 points.
Cayden Redfield drained all four of his trey attempts and scored 16 points. He also had three blocks and seven rebounds… UMary opened 2026 with an 86-83 NSIC loss at Minot State. Redfield had 16 points,
Andre Austin 12 and
Kelton Coleman and
Tamarrein Henderson ten each.

Minnesota State, after finishing third in the NSIC last year and making the NSIC tournament semifinals, is sitting 15
th after the first eight games. MSU is averaging 76.6 points and 37.9 rebounds per game, while shooting 43.4% from the field and 30.2% from three point range. The Mavericks have passed out 190 assists and have forced 186 turnovers. Senior Malcolm Jones leads the Mavericks with 13.5 points and 8.1 rebounds per game this season. Junior Traijan Sain has notched 11.6 points and 3.1 rebounds per game, while junior Caden Kirkman has tallied 11.1 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. Freshman Colton Benson has tallied 9.8 points a game, including a team-leading 27 three pointers. The Mavericks are led by Matt Margenthaler, who is in his 25th season at Minnesota State. He owns a career record of 515-232 (.690).

St. Cloud State is tied for the NSIC lead after eight games with six wins. The Huskies tied for third in the NSIC regular season standings last year. Head coach Quincy Henderson, who is in his 4
th season at SCSU, played on two NCAA Division II national championship teams and picked up his 50
th win as the Huskies head coach last weekend against Minnesota State. Luke Winkel leads SCSU in scoring at 18.6 ppg and has a team-best 24 treys. Wyatt Hawks checks in at 10.8 ppg and 8.2 rebounds/game. Bob Greichen chips in 10.1 ppg.

HISTORY LESSON – UMARY VS. MINNESOTA STATE
The Marauders are 5-16 all-time against the Mavericks… The Mavericks have won the last three meetings following back-to-back wins by the Marauders in the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons… The two teams first met Dec. 12, 2008, in Bismarck with the Mavericks winning 83-61… After losing the first four games in the series, UMary claimed its first win 84-69 over MSU in Bismarck on January 15, 2011 as All-American Anthony Moody hit eight treys and scored 31 points and Jordan Wilhelm added five three-pointers and 17 points… UMary snapped a 5-game losing streak to Minnesota State with a 96-91 overtime win in the 2016 NSIC quarterfinals… The Marauders picked up their first of two wins at the Taylor Center 75-61 on January 14, 2017. UMary last won at MSU 69-67 January 27, 2023, as Treyton Mattern scored 20 points and the Marauders finished 10-of-21 on treys... Kelton Coleman, a junior from Fort Worth, TX, has led UMary in scoring five times in 14 games and has reached double figures ten times. In his first year at UMary after playing at Augustana last season, the guard posted a season-best 22 points at Jamestown. He averages 12.7 ppg and 3.5 rebounds/game. He has gone to the free throw line 74 times, 23 more times than anyone else on the team. Coleman also leads UMary with 34 steals.

AUSTIN DISPLAYING HIS POWERS
Freshman
Andre Austin is off to a strong start. The Bismarck, ND, native leads the team in minutes played (354) and assists (42). The guard averages 7.2 points and 3.1 rebounds per game. He scored 14 points in his first college game against Northwestern Oklahoma State University and set a season-high with 15 in a win over MSU Moorhead. Austin graduated from Bismarck High School, where he played for Jordan Wilhelm, a four-year starter for the Marauders from 2007-11 and a member of UMary's 2011 NCAA tournament team.

Darren Tighe earned his first win at the helm of the Marauders in a 78-73 home win over Minot State University to open NSIC play. The Marauders rallied from 20 points down to get the win… Three days later Tighe gained his second win as UMary downed South Dakota Mines.Â

The Marauders have beaten two teams who qualified for the 2025 NCAA Division II men's basketball tournament, downing Minot State 78-73 and MSU Moorhead 96-90. MSU Moorhead was also the NSIC tournament champion.

DARREN TIGHE TAKES MARAUDERS HELM
Darren Tighe (pronounced TIE) is in his first season at UMary and earned his first two wins leading the Marauders in the first two home games of the season over Thanksgiving week. Running the show is not a new experience for Tighe. In ten years as a college head coach prior to UMary Tighe has a record of 169-112. In three seasons at Ridgewater (MN) Community College (2014-17), he led the Warriors to a mark of 48-34 that included a 20-win season to break a 50 year old school record for victories... In five seasons at Mayville (ND) State University (2017-22), the Comets went 92-42, won a league title and advanced to three national tournaments. Twice he earned coach of the year honors. The first season with the Comets, Mayville State went from nine wins the previous year to 18 wins… Tighe coached the previous two years at Dakota (SD) State University. In his first season the Trojans won 17 games and posted their first winning season in eight seasons.
