Late goals dash #14 Marauders upset hopes as #3 Bobcats end UMary's season 3-0

MARYLAND HEIGHTS, MO – Riding a hot Caleb Cross between the pipes, the University of Mary hockey team pushed one of the tournament favorites to the brink of elimination on the second day of the 2025 American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Men's Division I national tournament. After opening the tournament with a 4-0 win over the University of Pittsburgh on Thursday, the #14 Marauders were eliminated from title contention with a 3-0 loss to #3 Ohio University.

Two of the Bobcats goals came in the third period, including one into an empty net with 88 seconds to play in the game that sealed the Marauders fate.

UMary wraps up the 2024-25 season 23-15-0-0-0-0 (W-L-OTL-T-SOW-SOL) overall and 22-15-0-0-0-0 in ACHA MD1 play. An ACHA MD1 independent, Ohio University improves to 19-4-1-0-0-3 this season.

Participants in six ACHA national tournaments, this is only the second loss in regulation in 17 games. Head coach Dan Huntley has led the Marauders to a record of 14-2-1-0-0-0 (W-L-OTL-T-SOW-SOL) in ACHA tournament games. UMary has also won at least one game at each tournament.

With a scoreless first period looming on the horizon, the Bobcats broke onto the scoreboard with just 20 seconds remaining before the first intermission when Kevin Kasper finally knocked a puck past Cross. Ohio held a 15-9 edge in shots and had the only power play opportunity.

The Bobcats turned up the heat eve further in the second but all 16 shots were turned aside by Cross. The Marauders nearly kept pace by firing 10 shots at Bobcats goalie Scott Bird.

Ohio doubled its lead to 2-0 on a Mathieu Ovaert goal at 9:22. Jack Glen tacked on an empty net goal at 18:32.

Cross finished with 40 saves in the game. Bird stopped 25.

The Marauders were unable to score on their one power play opportunity while the Bobcats were 0-for-3.

UMary finishes the season with over 20 wins for the seventh straight season, a mark UMary has reached every year since the program was established in 2018-19.
