Two one-run losses see Marauders fall to DSU, UJ

JAMESTOWN, ND – Two one-run losses saw the University of Mary softball team (3-8) fall 8-7 to Dickison State University and 6-5 to the University of Jamestown. UMary held leads late in both games.

The Marauders return to action in Jamestown on Saturday, February 22, to Valley City State University at 4:30 pm and Concordia College at 6:30 pm.

Janelle Bergmann kicked off the scoring in the top of the first inning, lacing a double to left field to score Kelsey Mischel. Bergmann came home to score after Madison Schamanski singled to right field.

DSU scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 3-2 lead. Jaraya Diaz tied the game up in the top of the fourth inning after she singled to right field, scoring Madison Hunter.

The Blue Hawks scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth and added another run in the sixth inning to take a 6-3 lead.

The Marauders scored four runs, all with two outs, in the bottom of the seventh to take a 7-6 lead. Genevieve Hastings ripped a double down the left-field line to bring home Ariana Retuta. Sariah Perez then smacked a double of her own to score Hastings. Jenel Mallari then hit the Marauders third straight double to left-center, scoring Perez. Mallari came around to score after DSU made an error.

The BlueHawks tied the game up in the seventh inning after a base hit back to the pitcher. DSU walked the game off in the bottom of the eighth inning after Bailey Hansen hit an RBI single to right field.

Elyssa Verploegen pitched 4 2/3 innings of relief, allowing only one earned run as she struck out four batters.

UJ scored two runs to open the game in the top of the first inning. Sariah Perez responded in the bottom of the first with a solo home run to center field to make it a 2-1 ballgame. A two-run double by the Jimmies in the third inning extended their lead to 4-1.

UMary exploded for four runs in the bottom of the third to take a 5-4 lead. Janelle Bergmann smashed a double to right-center, scoring Perez and Cassidy Bagnell. Jenel Mallari singled to right field to score Bergmann. Ivee Johnsen then smacked a single through the right side to bring home Genevieve Hastings.

A two-run single in the sixth inning gave UJ the lead back. The Marauders failed to score again as the Jimmies won 6-5.
