The University of Mary men's basketball team plays a pair of Northern Sun games this week with a split home and away schedule. The Marauders play a fourth straight home game when UMary hosts Northern State University on Thursday, December 4. Tip-off is set for 5:30 pm at the McDowell Activity Center. UMary then heads across I-94 to Jamestown, ND, to play a first-ever NSIC game against conference newcomer University of Jamestown on Saturday, December 6. Game time is 1 pm at the Harold Newman Arena. Â

After opening with four losses, Northern State picked up its first win of the season in the NSIC opener with a 74-71 home win over Jamestown. The Wolves have had a tough schedule with two games against teams gaining national recognition (#20 Southern Nazarene, #RV Northern Michigan). HISTORY LESSON – UMARY VS. NORTHERN STATE
In a series dating back to November 1986 when UMary defeated Northern State 76-73, the Marauders are 8-29 against the Wolves. UMary won the only meeting of last season with Northern State 76-72 on the road November 26, 2024.
Ty Rogers scored a game-high 19 points and
Jeremiah Jones added 15. The win snapped a 15-game win streak for the Wolves over the Marauders… UMary's last home win occurred December 4, 2015. Brandon Tyler hit a free throw with 25 seconds left to break a tie in a 60-58 Marauders win. Marquealis Edwards scored 16 points to lead UMary.

INTERSTATE 94 HISTORY LESSON – MARAUDERS VS. JIMMIES
Separated by just 100 miles along Interstate 94, the Marauders and the University of Jamestown have played just twice since UMary joined the Northern Sun and NCAA Division II in 2006-07 with the Jimmies winning both games. Jamestown defeated UMary last season 82-69 in Bismarck, ND, on November 14, 2024. Anthony Walters scored 35 for UJ and
Kevin McGaskey had 16 for UMary. On November 11, 2017, the visiting Jimmies downed UMary 86-76… UMary last played at Jamestown January 13, 2006, with the home team downing the Marauders 82-74… The Jimmies have won the last 11 meetings with the Marauders… UMary last defeated Jamestown 67-62 on the road January 24, 2002, when both teams competed in the Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC-10). LAST WEEK
Playing at home for the first time this season, the Marauders picked up two wins in three chances… UMary rallied from 20 points down with 13 minutes to play to edge Minot State 78-73 in the NSIC opener. The Beavers scored the first 14 points of the game but a 27-7 Marauders run tied the game at 60-60. The win was the first for head coach
Darren Tighe at UMary.
Kelton Coleman led UMary with 16 points.
Noah Thomas added 15 and
Cayden Redfield had 12 points… UMary picked up a 2
nd straight win with an 82-71 victory over South Dakota Mines on day one of the Dakota Challenge, outscoring the Hardrockers 48-33 in the second half.

COLEMAN TAKES THE LEAD
Kelton Coleman, a junior from Fort Worth, TX, has led UMary in scoring four times in six games and has reached double figures five times. In his first year at UMary after playing at Augustana last season, the guard posted a season-best 18 points in the season opener against Northwestern Oklahoma State University. He averages 14.2 ppg and 4.7 rebounds/game. He has gone to the free throw line 37 times, 17 more times than anyone else on the team. Coleman also leads UMary with 16 steals.

AUSTIN DISPLAYING HIS POWERS
Freshman
Andre Austin is off to a strong start. The Bismarck, ND, native leads the team in minuyes played (138), field goal % (.500) and assists (14). The guard averages 6.5 points and 2.7 rebounds per game. He scored 14 points in his first college game against Northwestern Oklahoma State University and added ten points at Chadron State. Austin graduated from Bismarck High School, where he played for Jordan Wilhelm, a four-year starter for the Marauders from 2007-11 and a member of UMary's 2011 NCAA tournament team.

TIGHE SET FOR HOME COACHING DEBUT
Darren Tighe (pronounced TIE) is in his first season at UMary and earned his first two wins leading the Marauders in the first two home games of the season over Thanksgiving week. Running the show is not a new experience for Tighe. In ten years as a college head coach prior to UMary Tighe has a record of 169-112. In three seasons at Ridgewater (MN) Community College (2014-17), he led the Warriors to a mark of 48-34 that included a 20-win season to break a 50 year old school record for victories... In five seasons at Mayville (ND) State University (2017-22), the Comets went 92-42, won a league title and advanced to three national tournaments. Twice he earned coach of the year honors. The first season with the Comets, Mayville State went from nine wins the previous year to 18 wins… Tighe coached the previous two years at Dakota (SD) State University. In his first season the Trojans won 17 games and posted their first winning season in eight seasons.

Cayden Redfield is the leading returning scorer. Last year in his first season at UMary after transferring from United Tribes, Redfield averaged 4.7 ppg in 21 games.
