JAMESTOWN, ND – The University of Mary women's golf team finished strong at the UJ Fall Invite at the Jamestown Country Club, placing second out of seven teams. Top 5 finishes by junior
Carrie Carmichael and freshman
Annie Neva led the way for the Marauders.
UMary went into the second day just one stroke behind the hosting University of Jamestown. While they were not able to overtake the Jimmies, the Marauders were able to retake second place after briefly losing the spot to Dickinson State University.
The battle for second came down to the wire, as UMary was tied with the Blue Hawks when each team had one golfer remaining on their final hole. For the Marauders, Neva was able to birdie the par 5 tenth hole to secure second place.
"Despite a challenging day on the course, the team fought hard down the stretch to secure a second-place finish," said fourth-year head coach
Marion Hernandez. "Our best golf is still ahead of us and I'm looking forward to our next tournament. It's also great to see that four of our players finished in the top 10."
Individually, Carmichael's consistent 79 on day 1 and 2 landed her in fourth place with a score of 158 (+14). In fifth place was Neva, who ended with a 159 (+15). Rounding out the team scoring was a pair of juniors as
Abby Thelen and
Grace Stroh both shot a 166 (+22) to end the day in a tie for ninth.
The final team standings were as follows:
University of Jamestown – 1: 644 (+68)
University of Mary: 649 (+73)
Dickinson State University – 1: 651 (+75)
Valley City State University: 715 (+139)
University of Jamestown – 2: 735 (+159)
Dickinson State University – 2: 766 (+190)
Mayville State University: 848 (+272)
UMary will have one more meet on the road before hosting the Marauders Tournament at the end of the month. The team will be heading to South Dakota to take part in the Black Hills State Classic at Spearfish Canyon Golf Course on Sept. 23 and 24.
