SIOUX FALLS, SD – In a hard-fought match, the University of Mary tennis team suffered their first Northern Sun loss of the season to the University of Sioux Falls. By a razor thin margin, the Cougars downed the visiting Marauders 4-3.
The second-place Marauders are 4-1 on the season in NSIC matches and 5-5 overall. USF is 4-3 and 8-7.
Sioux Falls opened the night by claiming the doubles point after winning two out of three matches. The UMary #1 doubles team of
Chloe Chong and
Ilona Freitag swept Talia Janus and Chloe Siegfort 6-0. After USF won #3 doubles, the Cougars #2 duo of Sydney Osborn and Ella Hancock edged the Marauders pairing of Hala Awad and Mari Estinvil 6-7 (6-8) in a tiebreaker for what proved to be a valuable team point.
UMary claimed the top three singles matchups to regain the lead. Freitag gave the Marauders their first win on the night with a 6-1, 6-0 straight set win in the #3 singles match. Hossam Awad closed out UMary's second win, knocking off Siegfort 7-6, 6-2 in #2 singles. After dropping her first set, Chong rallied to win #1 singles over Janus 6-7, 6-0, 6-0 to push UMary into the lead at 3-1.
The Cougars then rallied to win each of the last three singles matches to claim a 4-3 win over the Marauders.
UMary closes out its visit to Sioux Falls, SD, with a match against NSIC-leading Augustana (12-3 overall, 6-0 NSIC) at 9 am on Sunday, April 7.
