Johnson tosses shutout as Marauders gain split in Kansas

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 EMPORIA, KS – Throwing her second shutout of her first collegiate season, Arria Johnson led the University of Mary softball team to a split on day two of a three day visit to Emporia, KS. The Marauders opened their two-game set with a 4-0 win over Rockhurst University. Host school Emporia State University then knocked off UMary 9-0.
 
GAME 1 RECAP
After pitching a 5-inning shutout in her first collegiate start one week ago against Dickinson State University, Arria Johnson managed the same feat in start two. The redshirt freshman threw a 7-inning compete game shutout in the Marauders 4-0 win over Rockhurst University. Johnson allowed just four hits and stranded seven runners. The native of Graham, WA, struck out three and walked four as UMary rebounded from a loss to Rockhurst the day prior.
 
The Marauders scored all the runs they would need in the third inning, plating three runs. Jaraya Diaz doubled to center with one out and scored on a 2-out infield single by Francesca Villaneda. After a single by Keely Porter, Janelle Bergmann doubled to center to score both runners.
 
UMary extended its lead to 4-0 in the sixth. Porter led off with a double and eventually scored on a Kelsey Mischel ground out.
 
Porter and Bergmann both had a pair of hits with Porter scoring twice and Bergmann driving in two.
 
GAME 2 RECAP
The Marauders struggled to get the bats going against Emporia State University, collecting only two hits despite striking out only once.
 
ESU jumped out to a hot start early, scoring one run in the first inning and five runs in the second inning.
 
Emari Evans came on in relief in the second and allowed only two earned runs in 2 1/3 innings pitched.
 
The Hornets added three more runs in the fourth inning, securing a 9-0 Marauders defeat after five.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE  
The Marauders (3-5 overall) wrap up the weekend on Monday, February 19, with a second game against Emporia State. First pitch is slated for 10:30 am.
