Offense takes center stage for Marauders on day two in Sunshine State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LEESBURG, FL – Offense ruled the day for the University of Mary softball team as seven Marauders had multi-hit games over the course of two of non-conference contests in the Sunshine State. UMary dropped a wild 18-14 extra inning game against Felician University before coming up short 6-4 to Le Moyne in game two in the Marauders second day competing in Florida.

GAME 1 | Felician University 18 University of Mary 14 (9)
In a marathon extra-inning extravaganza that featured seven lead changes and two ties, Felician University outlasted the University of Mary 18-14. The 9-inning contest lasted over three hours and featured 32 runs and 39 hits.

The Marauders claimed a 4-0 lead after scoring a pair of runs in the first and third innings. Hannah Chambers held the Golden Falcons in check early with three shutout innings to start the game. Felician scored four times in the fourth inning to pull even before using a solo home run in the fifth to take its first lead at 5-4, the start of multiple lead changes down the stretch. The Marauders took advantage of a Golden Falcons miscue to score three runs and regain the lead at 7-5 at the end of five.

In the sixth, the Golden Falcons scored another three times to build an 8-7 lead before the Marauders retaliated with three of their own to take a 10-8 lead entering the seventh with the opportunity to close out their second win in their week-long trip to the Sunshine State.

Janelle Bergmann and Sariah Perez led an 18-hit Marauders attack with four hits each. Bergmann also scored three times with Perez crossing the plate twice. Both knocked in one run.

Francesca Villaneda added three hits with two runs scored and an RBI. Ariana Retuta, Madison Wszolek, and McKenzie Reinhardt each had two hits. Retuta scored three times and Wszolek twice with Reinhardt and Brooke De Jonge driving in three each and scoring once.

Three Golden Falcons had four hits with Alexis Velotta and Daisha Howard also driving in four runs.

PIVOT POINT
Holding a 10-8 lead entering the top of the seventh inning, the Marauders retired the first two Golden Falcons hitters and were one out from a win. In stunning fashion, the next five Felician batters reached base with four scoring to take a 12-10 lead. Unperturbed, the Marauders responded with four hits and two runs to force extra innings for a second straight day.

The Golden Falcons continued to score, adding two runs in the 8th to force the Marauders to rally once again. Down to their last out with two runners in scoring position, Reinhardt blasted a triple over the right fielder to tie the game and force a ninth inning. After a single by the Felician scored the international tiebreaker ghost runner, the Golden Falcons took advantage of a pair of defensive miscues to score three more runs for an 18-14 lead, an advantage that the Marauders were unable to overcome.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE STAT OF THE GAME
The 32 runs was the most in a UMary game since the Marauders defeated MSU Moorhead 20-15 on April 5, 2012.

GAME 2 | La Moyne 6 UMary 4
Immediately jumping into another contest after a lengthy opener, the University of Mary made a late push to earn a split on the day but couldn't overcome an early deficit to Le Moyne in a 6-4 loss. The Dolphins scored three runs in the second to break a 1-1 tie and tacked on two more in the fifth. The Marauders rallied for three in the sixth but couldn't find two more runs to extend the game.

Jamison Ness and Emari Evans held the Dolphins to seven hits and four earned runs in a combined six innings of work, with Evans tossing 4.1 innings.

Both Francesca Villaneda and Devyn Ritz had a pair of hits for the Marauders. Madison Wszolek scored a pair of runs for the second straight game.

PIVOT POINT
With the bases loaded and one out in the second with the Marauders down 1-0, a McKenzie Reinhardt ground ball to second allowed the Marauders right fielder to reach on an error and score Wszolek to tie the game. The Marauders were unable to take advantage and left the bases loaded without scoring again in the inning. Le Moyne immediately responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning before tacking on two more in the fifth.

UMary made a run in the sixth, scoring three times as Ritz hit a sacrifice fly, De Jonge tripled home a run and Erin Murphy had a run-scoring single. While the Marauders were able to bring the tying run to the plate in the sixth and seventh innings UMary couldn't finish the climb.
