Box Score 2 TOPEKA, KS - The University of Mary Softball team finally got underway with the Washburn Invite Saturday afternoon. The Marauders fell in their doubleheader 7-0 to #23 Washburn University and later 18-4 to Newman University.
GAME ONE
Jaycee Ginter and Sheyenne Cheek combined for a no-hitter to lead #23-ranked Washburn (12-3) over UMary (2-7) 7-0. Ginter earned the win with five strikeouts in four innings, while Cheek fanned six batters in three innings.
Marrit Mead homered and doubled with two RBIs to lead the Ichabod bats. Autymn Schreiner also drove in two runs on a double. Three Marauders reached base safely on walks.
Emari Evans was tagged with the loss, giving up six earned runs, five hits, and three walks in 2.1 innings.
Nicole Eckhardt was solid in relief, giving up only a walk and striking out two batters through 3.2 innings. The Marauders committed three errors in the field.
GAME TWO
The Marauders combined for 7 base knocks and 4 runs in an 18-4 loss to Newman University (5-9) in game two Saturday.
Tori Waggoner provided an early spark for the Jets, leading off the game with a solo home run which led to a 3-0 top of the first. The Marauders hopped on the board in the fourth inning when
Brooke De Jonge drove in
Madison Wszolek on an RBI double.
Sariah Perez later cracked an RBI single up the middle to score
Erin Murphy with two outs in the fifth. Perez was then driven in on a
Brooke McClure RBI double in the next at-bat.
With one out in the bottom of the sixth,
Morgan Diedrich cranked a home run to left on the first pitch of the at-bat. The game concluded in the sixth inning with the Jets topping the Marauders 18-4.
Nicole Eckhardt was charged with the loss.
Hannah Chambers and
Jamison Ness entered in relief.
UP NEXT
UMary will wrap up the weekend with another doubleheader in Topeka on Sunday. The Marauders will face Northwest Missouri State University at 9:30 am and then Fort Hays State University at 1:30 pm.
