Marauders set to host Golden Eagles, Beavers on Feb. 3-4 in final home weekend doubleheader of season

THIS WEEK
Home for their final back-to-back weekend series at the McDowell Activity Center this season, the University of Mary hosts the University of Minnesota Crookston and Bemidji State University on Friday and Saturday, February 3-4. The Marauders open the weekend against the Golden Eagles at 5:30 pm on Friday. On Saturday the Marauders take on the visiting Beavers at 3:30 pm.
 
NORTHERN PURSUITS
After eight straight games against teams from the Northern Sun South division, the Marauders are back facing teams from the NSIC North for the final three weeks of the season. UMary has already played six of the other seven NSIC North squads once each and has completed the 2-game season series with Minot State.
 
LAST TIME OUT
The University of Mary earned a weekend road trip split against a pair of NSIC South teams… The Marauders opened with a 69-67 win at Minnesota State, just the second time UMary has won at MSU and just the 5th win all-time against the Mavericks in 18 meetings. Treyton Mattern led the Marauders with 20 points, hitting 4-of-5 from behind the arc. UMary was 10-for-21 overall on treys. The Marauders led by as many as 26 points before holding off a late charge. Kam Warrens finished with 15 points and seven rebounds for UMary. The senior hit three treys in six attempts during the game. Gertautas Urbonavicius added 11 points and six rebounds for the Marauders. Lucas Mayer and Zyon Smith both had eight points and two steals. Mayer also added five assists and five rebounds… In a reversal of fortune the next night, UMary made a late charge in a 67-62 loss at Concordia-St. Paul. Down as many as 20, the Marauders closed within three points late in the game but could get no closer. Mattern had 20 points for the second straight night as he hit three treys. Smith added 13 points and Warrens 10 points. In his first UMary start freshman Jeremiah Jones had 11 rebounds.
 
RECORDS
The Marauders enter the weekend 10-10 overall and 6-10 in the NSIC. UMary is 11th overall in the NSIC and 5th in the North… Minnesota Crookston earned its first NSIC win of the season last weekend and is 2-20 overall and 1-15 in the NSIC (16th overall, 8th North)… Bemidji State is 14-8 overall and 9-6 in the NSIC (7th overall, 4th North).   
 
CRUNCH TIME
The Marauders have six games remaining this season with only three at home. UMary hosts the University of Minnesota Crookston and Bemidji State February 2-3 and Northern State on February 16.
 
KNOCKING OFF A NEMESIS
In back to back games the Marauders knocked off a pair of teams UMary has historically struggled against. In their last home game the Marauders defeated Winona State for only the 3rd time in 25 games. In their following contest the Marauders went on the road and defeated Minnesota State for just the fifth time in 18 games… After also beating both the Warriors and the Mavericks last season, UMary now has back-to-back wins over both WSU and MSU for the first time in program history.
 
STEPPING FORWARD
In his third season with the Marauders, Kam Warrens continues to take impressive forward strides. After transferring to UMary from UMary from Yuba Community College, he averaged 4.5 points/game during the abbreviated 2020-21 COVID season before jumping to 8.7 ppg for the 2021-22 season. This season Warrens averages a team-leading 13.5 points/game while shooting 48.2% from the floor. He's making 42% of his treys and 86% of his free throws. Warrens also grabs 6.0 rebounds/game. Five times Warrens has cracked 20 points in a game and has led the team in scoring eight times.  
 
500
Kam Warrens cracked the 500 point club in a career-best 26 points at Augustana earlier this season. The senior has scored 543 points in his three seasons at UMary, covering 59 games… Gertautas Urbonavicius is closing in on 500 points at UMary. In his second season at UMary Urbonavicius is at 466 points with Marauders over 46 games.
 
HISTORY LESSON - MARAUDERS v. GOLDEN EAGLES
Since joining the Northern Sun for the 2006-07 season, the Marauders are 23-10 against the Golden Eagles… UMary is 14-3 at home and 9-7 away versus UMC… The Marauders are 15-7 in the last 22 outings against the Golden Eagles | LAST MEETING The visiting Marauders downed the Golden Eagles 80-76 on Dec. 31, 2022, as Treyton Mattern made six free throws in the final 65 seconds. Mattern led the Marauders with a career-high 21 points. Lucas Mayer added 19 points and Gertautas Urbonavicius had 16 while making all four trey attempts. Zyon Smith added 15.
 
HISTORY LESSON – MARAUDERS v. BEAVERS
UMary leads the series with BSU 19-15… The series began in 1971 with a 92-87 home win for the Marauders… The two teams played twice in the 1987 season with each school winning at home… Since becoming a member of the NSIC, UMary captured the first five meetings before BSU broke through with a home win in the 2009-10 season… After six straight losses to the Beavers, the Marauders swept the season series in 2014-15 and 2015-16… The two teams have split their season series the last six years… UMary has won seven out of its last ten games in Bemidji… five of the last seven games were played in Bemidji (both games in the COVID19 season of 2020-21) | LAST MEETING The Beavers defeated the visiting Marauders 77-67 on December 30, 2022. Cam Warrens scored a career-high 21 points and added 12 rebounds for a double double. Treyton Mattern and Lucas Mayer had 11 each and Gertautas Urbonavicius and Zyon Smith both had 10.
 
BALANCE
The Marauders feature six players scoring between 13.5 ppg and 6.6 ppg, with five players averaging at least 8.0 ppg. Kam Warrens leads the way at 13.5 ppg… Treyton Mattern is close behind at 11.8 ppg and Zyon Smith averages 11.0 ppg in his first season at UMary… Gertautas Urbonavicius checks in at 9.9 ppg with Lucas Mayer at 8.0 ppg and Jeremiah Jones at 6.6 ppg. 
 
HELPING HAND
The Marauders are averaging 14.8 assists per game to rank 67th in the country and 3rd in the NSIC.  
 
PICKPOCKET
Freshman Jeremiah Jones is 9th in the NSIC in steals (1.3/game). Treyton Mattern is 21st in steals at 1.1/game.
 
FOR THREE!
The Marauders are knocking down 36.9% of their 3-point attempts this season to rank 5th in the Northern Sun and 68th in NCAA Division II. Opponents are connecting on just 33.2% of their attempts from behind the arc. Gertautas Urbonavicius (20-of-47) leads the way at 42.6% with Kam Warrens at 42% (34-of-81) at 42% and Gunner Swanson at 41.4% (12-of-29) and... Zyon Smith and Kam Warrens both average 1.7 3s/game to lead UMary and are tied for 22nd in the NSIC.

Six different Marauders have led UMary in scoring this season: Kam Warrens (8x), Treyton Mattern (5x), Zyon Smith (3x), Gertautas Urbonavicius (3x), Lucas Mayer (2x) and Jeremiah Jones.
 
SHARE THE LOAD
The Marauders rank third in the NSIC in rebounds/game at 37.3 and it's a team effort. Kam Warrens leads UMary in rebounds/game (6.0) and is 13th in the league, followed Jeremiah Jones (5.8) at #17 and Gertautas Urbonavicius (5.5) at #21.
 
SECOND CHANCE CITY
The Marauders are 6th in the NSIC in offensive rebounds at 10.3. Lucas Mayer leads the second chance efforts with 2.4 offensive boards/game, fifth-most in the NSIC.
 
DOUBLING DOWN
Halfway through his freshman season, Jeremiah Jones has two double doubles and has had 10 pr more rebounds in a game three times. He had 15 points and 16 rebounds against Minot State. In the Florida Tech Thanksgiving Tournament championship game Jones dropped 11 points and ten rebounds. The guard from South Holland, IL, has also been a tremendous distributor with eight assists against Presentation and seven against PR-Bayamon… For the season he is averaging 6.6 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2.8 assists. He is shooting 78.8% (26-of-33) at the free throw line… Jones leads the Marauders in steals and is second in rebounds and assists… He ranks 17th in the NSIC in rebounding, 16th in assists and 9th in steals (1.3/game).

CENTURY STANDOUTS
The Marauders start a pair of Bismarck Century High School graduates in forward Lucas Mayer and Treyton Mattern. Both are second generation Marauders as their fathers played for UMary. Mayer's father Dave played on the Marauders 1981-82 Men's Basketball Hall of Fame team that set a school record for wins. Mattern's mother (Gerene Saylor Mattern) is a member of the Marauders Hall of Fame for her exploits on the track. And Mattern's father, Darren, coached both Mayer and Mattern at Century HS.
 
DEBUTS
Seven Marauders made their UMary debuts in the season opener against Presentation. Zyon Smith (Highland CC) transferred to UMary before the start of the season. After redshirting last season for UMary, Gunner Swanson came off the bench for the Marauders. Freshmen Marquel Saleek, Jeremiah Jones, Xavier Lewis and Ty Rogers all made their collegiate debuts this season.
 
RETURNING
The Marauders have six players back who saw considerable action last season, including four from the starting rotation.
  • Sr. F Gertautas Urbonavicius started all 27 games and was second on the team in scoring at 10.8 ppg… averaged 4.8 rebounds/game… shot 47%from the floor and 41% on treys.
  • Sr. F Kam Warrens started 26 of 27 games… averaged 8.7 points/game and team-high 6.1 rebounds/game
  • Sr. F Lucas Mayer started last 12 games of the season after returning from injury… averaged 6.9 points and 5.8 rebounds per game… shot team-leading 68.8% from the floor
  • Jr. G Treyton Mattern started 14 of the 18 games he played… averaged 3.7 points and 2.8 rebounds/game… 3rd on team with 1.7 assists/game.
  • Sr. F Veljko Radakovic was a key reserve for the Marauders on the front line, playing in 19 games. He averaged 2.5 ppg.
  • Jr. G Deven Franks saw significant minutes in the back court last season, playing in 18 games and starting three games… Averaged 2.4 ppg.
  • Soph. F Liam Dougherty was limited to six games as a freshman.
  • Fr. G Gunner Swanson redshirted last season at UMary
 
NEW
Zyon Smith lead a group of seven new players for the Marauders, six of whom are freshmen… Smith averaged 14.2 ppg and shot over 43% from the field for Highland Community College last season to earn 2nd team Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference honors.
 
Freshmen for 2022-23 includes guards Colton Hall, Jeremiah Jones and Marquel Saleek and forwards Xavier Lewis, Payton Mogire and Ty Rogers.
 
YEAR TWO
Head coach Jack Nelson returns for his season with the Marauders after leading UMary to their best conference record since 2017. Nelson directed the Marauders to their first Northern Sun tournament road victory with an 82-70 win at Winona State to send UMary to the quarterfinals and a trip to the Sanford Pentagon. During the regular season the Marauders defeated #6 University of Minnesota Duluth 75-71, the highest ranked NCAA team UMary has beaten at home. Nelson recruited and coached Kai Huntsberry, the 2021-22 NSIC Newcomer of the Year and a 1st team all-conference selection who broke the NSIC tournament record for 3s in a game with eight.
