MANKATO, MN – Setting the tone with a strong opening set, the University of Mary volleyball team rallied to win the final two sets and earn the Marauders the program's first-ever win over Minnesota State University 3-2 (25-20, 16-25, 20-25, 26-24, 15-9) in the 21st meeting between the two programs.
The Marauders controlled play in the center of the net.
Maddie Cooper posted team-highs in kills (14) and blocks (4) and hit .344 for the night.
Fellow middle hitter
Alexandria Harper chipped in eight kills on a .400 attack percentage and added three blocks.
Nehkyah Ellis added 11 kills and chipped in 10 digs. The Marauders outside hitter served five aces, made 10 digs and had three assisted blocks.
Kaia Sueker had a massive game in the back row, making 31 digs in the five sets.
Kameron Selvig dished out 40 assists, made seven digs and added four kills in five attacks.
A pair of 5-point runs by the Marauders (8-18, 3-13 NSIC) in the first set led to a 20-15 UMary advantage. MSU (13-11, 8-8- NSIC) rolled off four in a row to close to 20-19 before four straight points on a kill and block by Cooper, a kill by Selvig and an ace by Ellis ran the score to 24-19.
Ally Gruber finished the 25-20 set with a kill for the Marauders.
After wins by Minnesota State in the second and third set, UMary rebounded to take set four. After the Marauders pulled even at 19-19, both teams alternated scoring point by point to reach 24-24. UMary was finally able to string together back-to-back points, culminating with a kill from Ellis in a 26-24 win.
The Marauders started fast in the decisive fifth set, taking a 6-1 lead before a Gruber ace increased the score to 11-4. The Mavericks pulled within 13-9 before a Cooper kill and an attack error by Minnesota State sent UMary home with the win.
This is the second time this season the Marauders have beaten an opponent for the first time. UMary earned its first-ever win over Augustana a couple weeks prior.
UMary wraps up the 2023 season at home next weekend. The Marauders host the University of Minnesota Crookston on Friday at 6 pm. The season concludes on Saturday, November 11, against Bemidji State University.
