Ellis paces Marauders efforts in loss to #2 Golden Bears

ST. PAUL, MN – Taking on the challenge of another nationally ranked team, Nehkyah Ellis just missed a double double to lead the University of Mary volleyball team's efforts in a 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-23) loss at #2 Concordia-St. Paul.

Ellis finished with 11 kills and nine digs for the Marauders (4-12, 0-8 NSIC). The senior hit .212 for the night and also added a pair of assists with a block assist to post a team-best 11.5 points.

Maddie Cooper chipped in seven kills and had just one attack error in 19 swings to hit .316. The Marauders middle hitter also had a solo block and two assists.

Ally Gruber added seven kills. Kaia Suecker posted 12 digs and Kameron Selvig accumulated 22 assists, 10 digs, an ace and a block assist.

Jasmine Mulvihill paced the Golden Bears (16-1, 7-1 NSIC) with 12 kills, one of three with double digit kills for Concordia-St. Paul. She also had 12 digs.

Unable to keep pace with the Golden Bears in the first two sets, the Marauders found their footing in the third set. An early 5-0 run for UMary set an important tone. The Marauders claimed their biggest lead of the night at 20-16 on a misfire by the Golden Bears.

After a Gruber kill gave the Marauders a 21-18 edge, the Golden Bears reeled off five straight points before McKenna Kirkpatrick terminated a ball to close the gap to 23-22. An Ellis kill later pulled UMary within 24-23 before Mulvihill ended the match with her 12th kill of the night.

The Marauders close out the weekend with a 2 pm match at Winona State University on Saturday, October 7.
