FAYETTE, IA – Jessica Lemmon tallied twice on goals following penalty kicks set up Kendra Park to keep the University of Mary women's soccer undefeated season intact following a 2-2 draw at Upper Iowa University.
The Marauders are 6-0-2 on the season and 3-0-2 in the Northern Sun. The tie dropped UMary into second place in the NSIC with 11 points. This is the longest unbeaten streak by the Marauders to start a season in the program's NCAA era. Upper Iowa is 2-3-3 overall and 1-1-3 in the NSIC.
UMary received a jolt of energy early in the match off an amazing effort by Marauders goalkeeper
Madisyn Waltman. With the Marauders called for a foul inside the penalty area, Waltman twice denied Katie Samuels from posting the first goal of the game. Waltman dove to her right side on the initial penalty kick attempt for the first save and then stoned Samuels again on her follow-up off the loose ball.
Soon after Upper Iowa finally found a way to open the scoring. An ineffective clearing attempt by the Marauders put the ball on the foot of Alex Garcia. Without hesitation, she knocked the ball into the lower right corner of the net for a 1-0 Upper Iowa lead. It was just the second time this season the Marauders have trailed and was only the third goal allowed.
The Marauders had a few opportunities to score in the first half, including a header by
Eli Olsen off a direct free kick that bounced off the left post in the 40
th minute.
UMary finally found a way to even the game in the 54
th minute. Chasing down a ball just outside the goal box, Park was pulled down from behind by Leah Willinbring, who earned a yellow card for her actions that gave UMary a penalty kick. Lemmon, who scored on a penalty kick against Southwest Minnesota State on Sunday for the only goal of the game, drove the ball into the upper left side of the net to knot the game at 1-1.
Just 17 minutes later Park drew another foul in the penalty area, and once again Lemmon stepped forward to take the shot. This time Peacocks goalkeeper Isabelle Wagner made the save on the penalty kick but failed to control the rebound. Lemmon quickly pounced on the loose ball in front of the net and knocked it home for her second goal of the game and third of the season. The counter gave UMary a 2-1 lead with 18:20 left in the game.
Bottled up by the Marauders defense, the Peacocks were unable to challenge the UMary net until the 86
th minute when Waltman came up with a save.
The Peacocks managed to find the equalizer with just 45 seconds left in the match when Haley Renberg was able to get her toe on the ball outside the goal box just before Waltman arrived.
Waltman finished with four saves and Wagner seven.
The Marauders held a 14-8 advantage in shots and a 9-7 lead in shots on frame.
For the first time this season the Marauders allowed more than one goal in a game.
UMary closes out the weekend with a visit to Winona State University on Sunday, Sept. 25. Game time is 12 noon.
