Marauders take advantage of Mustangs miscue in 1-0 win to extend unbeaten streak to 7

BISMARCK, ND – Taking advantage of a major miscue, the University of Mary women's soccer team extended their unbeaten streak to an NCAA era record seven games with a 1-0 victory over visiting Southwest Minnesota State University.

26 minutes into a scoreless contest, the Mustangs were called for a handball in the penalty area to give the Marauders a penalty kick. Jessica Lemmon made sure UMary took full advantage of the opportunity.

A senior from Arvada, CO, Lemmon drilled the ball cleanly into the left side of the net for the lone counter of the game. For Lemmon it was her second goal of the season.

The Marauders continued to press for a second goal but could not add to their lead against a stingy Mustangs defensive group.

UMary smothered the SMSU attack, limiting the Mustangs to only four shots in the game with only two shots on frame.

Despite a quiet contest, UMary goaltender Madisyn Waltman remained sharp throughout. The Marauders all-time leader in shutouts preserved the UMary lead for the final time in the game on a hard shot by SMSU's Kirsten Wetterstrom in the 85th minute. This was the 28th clean sheet of Waltman's career.

Playing their 5th straight home game, once again the Marauders ruled the scoresheet. UMary held the edge in shots (15-4) and shots on frame (6-2). SMSU held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.

UMary, ranked 5th in the region in the latest United Soccer Coaches poll, improves to 6-0-1 overall and 3-0-1 in the NSIC. This is the longest unbeaten streak to start the season for the Marauders in UMary's NCAA era. SMSU is 0-3-4/0-3-1.

The Marauders open a 4-game road stretch with a stop at Upper Iowa University on Friday, Sept. 23.
