Hull, Turner pace Marauders in final postseason tuneup, will face Augie to open NSIC tournament on Wednesday

CROOKSTON, MN – Noah Hull drove in a pair of runs and Daniel Turner tossed more than four innings of scoreless relief in the regular season finale for the University of Mary baseball team. In a final tune-up for the Northern Sun tournament after clinching a playoff berth with a doubleheader sweep on Friday, the visiting Marauders dropped an 8-5 decision to the University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles. UMary defeated UMC 4-2 and 5-4 to open the series.

Winners of 14 of their last 21 games, the Marauders claimed the eighth seed in the Northern Sun baseball tournament, which is scheduled to run May 11-14 in Sioux Falls and Brandon, SD. UMary opens the tournament at 12 noon Wednesday against NSIC champion and 18th ranked Augustana at the #1 seeded Vikings home park, Ronken Field.

The tournament champion earns an automatic berth in the NCAA Central Region tournament on May 19-21.

The Marauders finish the regular season 24-25 overall and 16-18 in the NSIC to finish eighth in conference play.

UMary has earned a spot in the Northern Sun tournament for the second straight year after not qualifying the first 13 years in the league.

The Marauders opened the game on a roll, scoring three times in the top of the first inning. Michael Polson led off the game with a home run before Hull scored James Martin and Derek Shoen with a single.

The Golden Eagles responded by nearly tripling the Marauders output, scoring eight times in the first inning. Already leading 4-3, Tyler Jochen delivered a 3-run home run for UMC to put the game out of reach. Jake Hjelle finished the outburst with a run-scoring single to make the UMC lead 8-3.

Turner came on in relief in the first inning and immediately shuttered the Golden Eagles offense. The senior righthanded retired the only batter he faced in the first to end the inning, then pitched four straight scoreless innings. Turner didn't allow a run in 4.1 innings of work. He allowed just two hits and struck out five.

Jayden Smith added 1.2 innings of scoreless and hitless relief. Gabe Ridenour chipped in another 1.1 scoreless innings, striking out three.

UMary chipped away at the UMC lead with single runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Krece Papierski was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the 7th to score Kyle Jameson. In the eighth, Jameson doubled home Ethan Baptie to close within 8-5. UMary was unable to get any closer, leaving five runners on base in those two innings combined and 11 for the game.
