Shoen named to CoSIDA Academic All-District Baseball Team

BISMARCK, ND – Honored as one of the top players in the conference following a record-setting performance on the diamond, University of Mary junior Derek Shoen is also receiving plaudits for his work in the classroom. The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) selected Shoen to the 2021-22 Academic All-District Baseball Team.

Shoen is one of only 11 scholar-athletes voted to represent NCAA Division II - District 7 on the Academic All-District Team. The Truman, MN, native now advances to the CoSIDA Academic All-America ballot. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America honorees will be announced in June.

The two-time All-Northern Sun first baseman owns a 3.80 grade point average at the University of Mary while pursuing a degree in Sports & Leisure Management/Business Administration.

Shoen broke longstanding team records this season for home runs (14) and run batted in (51). In 51 games he hit .339 (60-of-177) with a .473 on base percentage, a .644 slugging percentage and an OPS of 1.117 to lead the Marauders in each category. Shoen also scored 50 runs, hit 12 doubles, earned 35 walks, was hit by a pitch 12 times and was successful in all three steal attempts. Additionally he tied for the team lead in saves with two and struck out nine in 12.1 innings.

Just two of the 11 CoSIDA Academic All-District 7 selections hail from the Northern Sun conference. The Great American and Mid-America conferences also are part of District 7.

Shoen is just the fourth Marauders baseball player to earn CoSIDA Academic All-District honors, joining Andy Leer (2010 2nd team), Austin Grustad (2014 1st team) and Andrew Beyer (2017 1st team). Beyer also earned a spot on the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team.

The 2021-22 Academic All-District Baseball Team, selected by CoSIDA, recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances in the competition realm and in the classroom. The CoSIDA Academic All-America® program separately recognizes honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA. First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® ballot.

The Division II and III CoSIDA Academic All-America® programs are partially financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III national governance structures to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2021-22 Divisions II and III Academic All-America® programs.
