ABERDEEN, SD – Another complete game pitching performance for the University of Mary, this time by
Ryan Chamberlain, earned the Marauders a doubleheader split on the road at Northern State University. The Marauders rolled past the Wolves 11-1 in the opener before Northern State held off a late UMary run to claim game two 6-5.
The Marauders improve to 15-12 overall and 8-6 in the Northern Sun. The Wolves are 8-14 and 6-11.
UMary is next scheduled to play at Augustana University on Friday and Saturday, April 3-4. However it is anticipated the series will shift location due to anticipated snow and cold throughout the Dakotas. Check www.GoUMary.com for updated information.
GAME 1: University of Mary 11 Northern State University 1
University of Mary righthander
Ryan Chamberlain held the Northern State University offense in check while the Marauders offense rocked the Wolves for 11 runs and 11 hits in an 11-1 UMary win.
Throwing his first complete game of the season and earning his first win of the year, Chamberlain held the Wolves to one run over seven innings. He struck out five, scattered six hits and didn't walk or hit any batters.
Chamberlain faced the minimum amount of nine hitters over the last three innings. In both the fifth and sixth innings, the Wolves managed leadoff singles before Chamberlain twice induced ground ball double plays.
This is the third complete game for the UMary pitching staff in the last five games.
Cru Walker delivered the Marauders first runs of the game with a double to right field in the second inning that scored a pair of runs. A ground ball by
Luke Rhee followed to score another run in the inning to give UMary a 3-0 lead.
After the Wolves scored a run in the fourth, the Marauders put the game out of reach in the fifth. Following RBI doubles by
Isaac Pegors and
Bryce Leafgren,
Mason Saint Hilarie hit a 3-run home run to right field to increase the UMary advantage to 8-1.
Saint Hilarie finished the game with four RBIs.
Kalem Haney knocked out three hits and scored twice, extending his hit streak to ten games. During those ten games the senior leadoff hitter was 21-for-38 at the plate.
Marcus Butts has two hits, scored twice and drove in a run. Pegors went 1-for-3 with a double, a walk, an RBI and two runs scored.
Casey Vining led the Wolves with two hits, including a double. Andrew Niaves homered for the only NSU run.
GAME 2: Northern State 6 UMary 5
Bryce Leafgren paced the Marauders with three hits and
Isaac Pegors and
Marcus Butts added two each but their efforts were unable to overcome a strong middle innings push by the Wolves in a 6-5 Northern State win.
The Wolves opened the scoring with two runs in the first. The Marauders then grabbed their only lead of the day with three runs in the third as
Isaac Pegors homered to right center, Butts doubled home a run and Hank Griifin drove in a third for a 3-2 UMary lead.
Wasting no time retaliating, Northern State used an Easton Rerick home run to tie the game and an RBI single from Collin Lott in the bottom of the third to retake the lead at 3-2. Single runs by the Wolves in the fourth and sixth innings provided Northern State with a 6-3 lead.
After leaving the bases loaded in the fifth and two on in the sixth, UMary pulled within one in the seventh on a 2-run single by
Kieran Gaffney. Despite scoring two, the Marauders stranded two more runners on base in the seventh, one in the eighth and two more in the ninth. Over the course of nine innings UMary left 13 runners on base.
Leafgren finished the game 3-for-4. He also walked and scored two runs. Pegors was 2-for-5 with a home run. Butts went 2-for-4 with a walk, a double, two runs scored and an RBI.
Cole Smith pitched two scoreless innings to close out the game for UMary.
Jacob Burgess tossed two innings and gave up a single unearned run.
Jack Thompson struck out two in a scoreless inning of relief.
Easton Rerick led the Wolves attack with three hits, two RBIs and a run scored.
