Astley Davis won his first conference title with a tremendous effort in the long jump at the 2022 Northern Sun Men's Outdoor Track & Field Championships on a blustery day in Aberdeen, SD.
Davis just missed winning the triple jump conference title last spring, placing second overall at his first outdoor collegiate championship meet. Today Davis took control of the long jump with his best mark of the season. On his second attempt of the day, the Kingston, Jamaica, native exploded to sail 7.51 meters to take early control of the leaderboard. Davis won the event by .09 meters to stand atop the podium. He remains ranked 13
th in the country.
Led by
Jesse Kaas, a pair of Marauders placed in the 10,000 meter run. Kaas, an all-conference performer, placed 5
th in the longest event of the weekend, finishing the 10K in 31:58.52. Freshman
Isaac Anderson was close behind, placing 8
th in a time of 32:57.15.
Malakhi Stevenson finished fifth in the decathlon with a career-high 5,534 points. The freshman had the top mark in the discus among the decathletes and was among the top four placers in five of the ten events.
Several Marauders advanced to Saturdays finals after stellar performances on the track in the preliminaries:
- 1500 meter run| Guillermo Fregoso (4:03.42) advances after posting the 9th best time of the day
- 400 meter dash | Both defending NSIC champion Isaac Huntington (48.81) and Akil Howell (49.34) advance to the finals. Huntington was 3rd and Howell 6th in the preliminaries.
After seven events the Marauders stand in 6
th place with 19 points entering Championship Saturday.
