SIOUX FALLS, SD – For the fourth time in a week, a longtime University of Mary baseball record was broken. After breaking the school mark for strikeouts in a game in his last start,
Austin Wagner broke the Marauders single season strikeout record with a punchout in the day's first game of the weekend against Minot State University. While the Marauders will remember the game for the broken record, UMary's win streak was snapped at eight as the Beavers swept the Northern Sun doubleheader.
GAME ONE | Minot State 4 University of Mary 0
One week after setting the University of Mary single game strikeout record,
Austin Wagner broke the Marauders single season mark for punchouts. Needing four entering the day to pass the total of 73 registered by Dale Dingmann in 2000, Wagner whiffed seven Minot State hitters in his six inning outing.
In a battle between a pair of hard throwing lefties, Minot State's Ricky Apodaca matched Wagner's seven strikeouts while throwing four no-hit innings. A trio of Beavers relievers combined with Apodaca on the shutout while holding the Marauders to two hits on the day.
Minot State opened the scoring with a single run in the second inning. A Marauders miscue in the third led to three unearned runs.
Wagner set the season strikeout record in the fourth inning when he struck out Mark Ossanna for the final out. The junior from Fond du Lacs, WI, allowed six hits and one walk. Only one of the four runs he allowed was earned.
PIVOT POINT
Trailing by one after two innings, the Marauders allowed three unearned runs in the third inning and never recovered. With two outs and a Minot State runner on first base, an errant throw allowed the inning to continue and the Beavers took advantage of the extra out. Three straight two-out run-scoring singles followed to push the MSU advantage to 4-0.
