SIOUX FALLS, SD – Facing the prospect of being swept on the weekend by their instate rival, the University of Mary reversed their fortunes behind an exceptional effort by the Marauders bullpen and a relentless and resilient offense to defeat Minot State University 13-9. Down six runs in the third inning, UMary scored the final ten runs of the Northern Sun game.
Trailing 9-3 in the top of the third inning, five Marauders relievers pitched 6.1 innings of scoreless ball to give UMary a chance to peck away at Minot State's advantage. After the Marauders allowed six runs in the third inning,
Gabe Ridenour entered the game and posted the final out to start an impressive relief line for UMary.
The Marauders started to carve into the deficit in the bottom of the third inning.
James Martin, who had an RBI single in the first, led off the inning with a triple to left field and scored on a
Noah Hull groundout to close within 9-4.
After Ridenour came on to pitch a scoreless fourth inning,
Jayden Smith did the same in the fifth.
UMary got back on the scoreboard in the fifth. Following an infield single by Martin and a walk to
Michael Polson, the pair both moved into scoring position on a fly ball to right. A 2-out flare to left field by
Kyle Jameson scored both runners and UMary was back in the game at 9-6. The end of the inning also brought to a close Minot State ace RJ Martinez's outing. Martinez entered the game with an ERA below 2.00 and a WHIP under 1.0.
Next up for the Marauders bullpen was
Shaun Hickey. Entering the game with one out and a runner on first in the sixth inning, Hickey ended the Beavers threat with a couple of ground outs to conclude the inning.
Derek Shoen and Calvin James walked to open the bottom of the sixth and both runners advanced into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by
Krece Papierski. Immediately Martin singled to center to score both runners and close the UMary deficit to 9-8.
The Marauders gained their first lead of the weekend in the seventh.
Kendall Keller started the rally with a one out bunt single, followed by a
Derek Shoen single to left. James tied the game on a single through the left side to score Keller and a Papierski single loaded the bases. Shoen scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch before James came home on a Martin groundout. A balk followed to score Papierski and give the Marauders a 12-9 lead.
Liam Sommer next stepped onto the hill for UMary in relief of Hickey and set the Beavers down in order before the Marauders tagged on an insurance run.
Provided a 13-9 lead after Keller drove home Polson with a single in the eighth, Shoen moved from first base to the hill to close out the game. The junior closed out the scoreless bullpen effort by the Marauders after limiting the Beavers t a harmless walk.
Martin led the Marauders attack with four hits, including a triple. He finished with four RBIs and two runs scored. Shoen and James both scored three times and Papierski and Polson both tallied twice. Overall the Marauders had 16 hits in the game to eight for the Beavers.
