Shoen breaks another record as Mustangs downs Marauders

MARSHALL, MN – Derek Shoen broke his second University of Mary single season record in a week while Marauders hopes to take a step forward in the Northern Sun standings suffered a setback in a doubleheader at Southwest Minnesota State University. The visiting Marauders dropped both games to the Mustangs, falling 5-2 in the opener with an 8-7 in extra inning loss in game two.

With a run-scoring single in the ninth inning of the second game, Shoen drove in his 49th run of the season to set a new school record. Todd Houston held the old mark when he accumulated 48 RBIs in 1997. He set the school home run record last Thursday against Bemidji State University.

GAME 1 | Southwest Minnesota State 5 University of Mary 2
A pair of Southwest Minnesota State home runs in the fifth inning broke open a tie game as the Mustangs opened the Northern Sun doubleheader with a win over visiting UMary. In a quiet contest offensively, the Marauders scratched out four hits and the Mustangs managed just six.

SMSU scored a pair of runs in the first inning before UMary starting pitcher Jonathan Draheim settled down. At one point he retired nine straight hitters and kept the Mustangs off the scoreboard for three straight innings.

The Marauders pecked away at their deficit with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Michael Polson drove in Krece Papierski with a two-out single to center in the fourth. Calvin James pulled a two-out single down the right field line in the fifth inning to score Kendall Keller with the tying run.

PIVOT POINT
SMSU gained control of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Max Kalenborg hit a leadoff home run to give the Mustangs a 3-2 lead. Keenan Wentzel later followed with a 2-run shot to left to provide a cushion.

Back-to-back walks for the Marauders to start the seventh gave UMary hope but a double play grounder followed by a fly ball ended the Marauders hopes.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Cal James | 2x4, 1 RBI
  • Kendall Keller | 2 BB, 1 R, SB
  • SMSU Owen Latendresse | W (2-2), 5.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 8 K

STAT OF THE GAME
This was the 15th multi-hit game of the season for Cal James… James has hits in 21 of the last 23 games.

GAME 2 | SMSU 8 UMary 7 (10 innings)
Behind a strong starting performance from Ty Jones, the University of Mary built a four-run lead. A resilient Southwest Minnesota State squad rallied to score three runs in the ninth inning to force extra innings before the Mustangs captured a walk-off win in the tenth inning.

Jones struck out six in 5.2 innings, limiting the Mustangs to five hits, three runs, two earned runs and three walks. Gabe Ridenour held SMSU to one unearned run in the next 2.1 innings, striking out four and allowing just two hits and no walks.

The Marauders took a 2-1 lead after the second, keyed by a Kyle Jameson run scoring single. UMary's lead jumped to 4-1 in the fourth on a passed ball and another RBI single from Jameson. Kendall Keller delivered runs for the Marauders with a single in the sixth and a sacrifice fly in the eighth. Shoen capped the scoring with a two-out single in the eighth to set the Marauders record and increase UMary's lead to 7-3.

PIVOT POINT
Looking to protect a 7-4 lead in the ninth inning, Shoen took to the hill in hopes to close out the game. In six appearances, he had two saves and had yet to give up an earned run. After retiring the first batter, the Mustangs touched Shoen for two singles and a walk to load the bases before a hit batter forced home a run. Mark Schommer came in for UMary and induced a ground ball. Initially the runner at first was called out on a tag play by second base as the runner from third scored SMSU's 6th run. After a video review, the officials ruled the runner going to second eluded the tag and was safe, keeping the bases loaded with one out instead of two outs and runners on the corners. SMSU took advantage of the second out, tying the game and forcing extra innings on a sacrifice fly to right.

After UMary left the bases loaded in the tenth on three walks, SMSU won the game on a 2-out single by Jaxon Haase.
