UPDATE | James, Shoen break records as Marauders extend win streak to 8 in sweep of Beavers

COLD SPRING, MN – Cal James and Derek Shoen broke long-time University of Mary records on back-to-back at bats to key a 9th inning rally as the Marauders swept a Northern Sun doubleheader from Bemidji State University. After winning the opener 4-3, James doubled home the go-ahead run and Shoen immediately followed with a 2-run home run to cap a 5-run 9th inning outburst in a 12-9 victory in game two and extending the team's win streak to eight.

James now owns the Marauders record for doubles in a single season with 17. The old mark was 16 by Jason Duppong in 2000 and Michael Feldman in 2008. Shoen broke the UMary mark for single season home runs with 13. The former mark was 12 by Steve Laasko in 1998.

UMary's eight straight wins is an NCAA era school record for the Marauders. The previous mark was seven in 2007 and 2013.

SCHEDULE UPDATE
The Marauders upcoming weekend series with Minot State University is moving to Ronken Field in Sioux Falls, SD. The Marauders and the Beavers will play a doubleheader Saturday, April 23, with the first pitch set for 1:30 pm. On Sunday, April 24, a single game between the Marauders and Beavers is set for 10 am. The series is moving to the homefield of Augustana due to last week's snowstorm rendering fields in both Bismarck and Minot unplayable.

GAME ONE | University of Mary 4 Bemidji State 3
A costly defensive miscue by the Beavers in the second inning and an impressive start by Jonathan Draheim earned the Marauders a 4-3 win in a doubleheader moved to Cold Spring, MN, after recent snowfall and moisture in Bemidji, MN.

Making just his second appearance in the last 26 days due to injury, Draheim was a force on the mound. The junior righthander tossed 5.0 innings, striking out six without allowing a walk. Draheim gave up six hits and single runs in the first and fifth innings while tossing three shutout innings in-between.

After BSU opened the scoring, the Marauders crossed the plate twice in the second and added a run in the fourth on a James Martin single to score Derek Shoen. BSU closed within a run in the fifth before Krece Papierski doubled home Martin for a 4-2 lead. The Beavers scored again in the 6th to pull within 4-3. Shoen then moved to the mound to close out the game, throwing a shutout inning to pick up his second save of the season.

TURNING POINT
Down 1-0 after the opening inning, Noah Hull walked with one out in the second and Papierski was hit by a pitch with two down. A fly ball to left field by Kendall Keller was dropped by the Beavers, allowing Hull and Papierski to score. UMary remained in front the rest of the game.

GAME TWO | UMary 12 BSU 9
The Marauders scored the last eight runs of the game to rally for their eighth straight game, an NCAA era team record. Eight different Marauders had hits and eight scored runs while Gabe Ridenour closed out the game with 3.2 innings of scoreless relief.

Shoen led the Marauders attack with three hits, two runs scored and four RBIs. In addition to setting a new single season home run record, he tied Todd Houston for runs batted in in a single season with 48. Houston set the standard in 1997.

Michael Polson, James Martin, Jon Prokop and Kendall Keller all had two hits. Keller, in a reserve roll, and Jameson both drove in two runs. Jameson, Polson, Shoen and Prokop all scored twice.

PIVOT POINT
Ridenour came into the game with one out, one run in and two runners on base. After a sacrifice fly, the freshman closed out the Beavers threat with a strikeout and the Marauders trailing 9-4. With Ridenour stifling the Beavers attack, the UMary offense found its footing.

The Marauders started their comeback with three runs in the seventh inning. A Martin single to left scored Shoen before a two-out single to left by Keller scored Martin and Noah Hull to pull within 9-7.

Krece Papierski, Prokop and Keller stroked three straight singles to open the ninth and load the bases. A fielders choice off the bat of Polson scored Papierski to close the gap to one run before a Jameson sacrifice fly scored Prokop to knot the game at 9-9. Down to their last out, James pulled his record-setting double to right field to drive in Polson for the Marauders first lead of the game. Shoen immediately followed with his record-tying home run to prove some cushion.
