Lineup depth, Turner relief effort rallies Marauders past Cardinals 12-6 to open series

LIBERTY, MO – Big performances throughout the lineup and a strong relief effort from Daniel Turner rallied the visiting University of Mary baseball team past William Jewell University 12-6.The Marauders scored the last nine runs of the game to overcame a pair of 3-run deficits in the non-conference victory.
 
Seven different Marauders scored runs in the contest and eight different UMary players had hits, including five with two apiece.
 
UMary (8-5 overall) scored single runs in each of the first two innings before WJU crossed the plate five times in the second, keyed by a 2-run triple by Jake Wilcox. After the Marauders scored a run in the third, the Cardinals scored once in the fourth to take a 6-3 lead.
 
The Marauders started to claw back in the fifth, scoring once on a sacrifice fly by Riley Schlimm.
 
Turner took the hill in the bottom of the 5th inning and shut down a Cardinals lineup that piled up eight hits in the first four innings. The righthander tossed four straight shutout innings as the Marauders attack found their groove.
 
Calvin James opened a four-run Marauders outburst in the sixth, doubling home Michael Polson. After a groundout scored Kyle Jameson, Kendall Keller scored James on a single to right. A bases loaded walk by Arian Jimenez brought home Derek Shoen and UMary led 8-6.
 
The runs kept coming with two more in each of the seventh and eighth innings with James in the middle of both outbursts. The All-NSIC third baseman hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh and doubled home a run in the eighth. He finished the day with two doubles, two runs scored and three RBIs.
 
Jameson went 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored and an RBI. Shoen finished 2-for-6 with a double, three runs scored and two RBIs. Keller and Braxton Inniss both were 2-for-5 with a run scored plus an RBI. Keller had a double and Inniss a triple. For the game UMary finished with seven extra base hits among 13 hits.
 
Jonah Sanford went 5-for-5 for William Jewell as the Cardinals finished with 15 hits and three extra base hits.
 
Picking up his first win this season, Turner tossed four scoreless innings. He struck out six and didn't walk a batter while allowing six hits. Gabe Ridenour pitched a scoreless ninth inning, striking out two hitters.
 
With rain anticipated in the Kansas City area on Friday, the Marauders and the Cardinals will wrap up their three-game set with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 19. First pitch is slated for 12 noon at the Urban Youth Academy in Liberty, MO.
