Strong starting pitching not enough for Marauders in losses at William Jewell

LIBERTY, MO – A pair of solid starts fell to the wayside for the University of Mary as the Marauders closed out their non-conference baseball schedule with a pair of losses to William Jewell College. The Marauders opened the three-game series with a victory on Thursday before the Cardinals rallied to win Saturday's opener 4-3 and game two 12-2.

The Marauders (8-7 overall) start Northern Sun play at Wayne State College on March 23. The Cardinals improve to 13-4.

GAME 1: William Jewell 5 UMary 4
Austin Wagner allowed one earned run in five innings and Calvin James produced three hits as the Marauders jumped out to an early lead in Saturday's opener. A James Martin bases-loaded triple in the first inning and a James solo home run in the second gave the Marauders a 4-0 lead. William Jewell scored a pair of runs in the second to set up a dramatic walk-off win for the Cardinals in the seventh inning.

TURNING POINT
Trailing 4-2 entering the bottom of the 7th inning, the first Cardinals batter of the inning struck out before two hit batters sandwiched around a walk loaded the bases for the home team. A single to right by Cameron Fliege tied the game. The next hitter hit a grounder to first to score Anthony Hansen from third when his slide at the plate eluded the tag for the winning run.

TURNING POINT
A Shoen single in the first inning scored James and a double play grounder in the second plated the second UMary run of the game to provide the Marauders an early 2-0 lead.
