Jones, Sinclair power Marauders past Bearcats 9-3

MARYVILLE, MO – A fast start with the bats and a strong start on the hill by Joseph Sinclair earned the University of Mary baseball team a 9-2 win at Northwest Missouri State University in non-conference action.

Taking advantage of a fielding error by the Bearcats with two outs in the first inning, a Ty Jones single to left combined with another home team error scored Calvin James and Derek Shoen for a quick 2-0 lead.

Taking advantage of a bout of wildness by Bearcats starting pitcher Jace Davidson, the Marauders scored three runs in the second inning on bases loaded walks to Michael Polson, James and Schoen to boost the UMary lead to 5-0.

That was more than enough runs for Sinclair and the Marauders pitching staff. The lefty from Vancouver, British Columbia, held the Bearcats to just two hits and one run in six innings, earning his first UMary victory in his longest outing of the season. Sinclair stuck out three hitters and walked three.

The Bearcats struck for their only run of the game in the bottom of the third inning. The Marauders got the run back in the top of the fourth on an RBI single from James to score Polson.

UMary put the game away in the 7th inning. A run-scoring single by Shoen to score James was followed by a 2-run blast by Jones, his first home run of the season.

Sinclair and three relievers combined to allow just four hits in the game while striking out eight. Mark Schommer and Mitch Oehme both struck out a pair of hitters in an inning of work while Shaun Hickey pitched one scoreless inning.

Both James and Jones had 3-hit games as the Marauders pounded out ten total. James was 3-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored and two RBIs. Jones was 3-for-5 with a home run, a run scored and three RBIs.

Polson finished with an RBI and two runs scored. Shoen scored twice and drove in two runs.

UMary improves to 7-5 with the win. Northwest Missouri State is 5-16.

The Marauders continue their swing into Missouri with a trio of games at William Jewell College in Liberty. In a scheduling change, the teams will play a single game on Thursday, March 17, at 12 noon as originally planned. However, due to projected rain on Friday, the Marauders and the Cardinals will play a doubleheader on Saturday.
