MANKATO, MN –
Brendon Hoyte exploded down the track for one title and a runner-up finish in another for the University of Mary on the final day of the 2022 Northern Sun Men's Indoor Track Championships.
The Marauders finished fourth overall at the NSIC championships. UMary earned 55.83 points and improved one slot over last year's 5
th place finish indoors. Host Minnesota State won the title with 200.16 points. Augustana (135) was second, followed by MSU Moorhead (126), UMary, Concordia-St. Paul (51), Northern State (48.5), Wayne State (40), Minnesota Duluth (26), Sioux Falls (25.5), Minot State (20) and Southwest Minnesota State (13).
"With a school record and conference champion, the men fought back after a slow start to finish with great performances in the last three events," said Marauders interim head coach
Cale Korbelik. "It feels good to place better as a team than last season. We are hoping to build off that going into the outdoor season."
A freshman from Barbados, Hoyte claimed the Marauders lone championship of the weekend in the next to last individual race of the day. Posting a season-best mark of 22.02 seconds, Hoyte earned his first collegiate conference title, narrowly winning the 200 by .03 seconds.
In his first race of the day, Hoyte placed second in the 60 meter dash with an NCAA qualifying time of 6.82 seconds. It was also his best time of the season.
Dawson Strom established a new Marauders school record in the 3,000 meter run. The junior broke Derek Myer's 2019 mark by over five seconds with a clocking of 8:23.28 to place 6
th in the event. Right behind in 7
th was
Jesse Kaas, who also exceeded the old record with a time of 8:24.10.
Akil Howell missed all-conference honors in the 400 meter dash by .05 seconds, taking 4
th place in the finals with a time of 49.21 seconds.
Isaac Huntington claimed 8
th in 50.77 seconds to also score for the Marauders.
Samuel Honeyman placed 8
th in the 600 meter run (1:24.85).
In the final race of the championships, Hoyte, Honeyman, Howell and Huntington combined to run the 4x400 meter relay in 3:22.61 to place third.
A day after posting a podium finish in the long jump,
Astley Davis did the same in the triple jump. The sophomore placed 8
th with a distance of 13.85 meters on his second try of the day.
