Malone engineers early goals as Marauders return to winning ways on senior recognition day

BISMARCK, ND – A pair of early goals engineered by Mo Malone returned the University of Mary to its winning ways. The Marauders ran past Wayne State College 2-0 with Malone contributing a goal and assist and Madisyn Waltman posting her 31st career clean sheet.
 
Waltman was one of six seniors UMary honored prior to the game. UMary also recognized Yasmina Dokara, Elizabeth Gilbertson, Jessica Lemmon, Taylor Meyrick and Marriann Senftner and their families prior to the contest.
 
Undefeated through the first ten games of the season, the Marauders lost their first contest of 2022 at Northern State on Sunday. Rebounding impressively in their next outing, UMary started fast and finished strong.
 
With the Marauders on the attack from the outset, Olivia Gardner played a ball back to Malone on the top left of the penalty area. Left alone, Malone gathered the ball and with deliberative action, blasted a shot into the right upper 90 of the goal from over 25 yards out just 5:43 into the Northern Sun match. It was Malone's first UMary goal.
 
UMary struck again in the 18th minute, this time with Malone proving the helper. Taking a tap from Jessica Lemmon off a corner kick set piece from the left side, Malone one-timed her touch across the goal to Kendra Park on the far side. Off a header, Park delivered her fourth goal of the season, knocking the ball into the net just inside the right post for a 2-0 UMary lead.  
 
The Marauders defense dominated the remainder of the match. UMary allowed visiting Wayne State at total of seven shots, with only four on frame. Waltman stopped all four shots on net, making two saves in each half.
 
UMary finished with eight shots for the game and three on frame.
 
The Marauders improved to 8-1-3 overall and 5-1-3 in the NSIC. The Marauders jumped past Augustana, Sunday's opponent, in the league standings into a tie for 4th place with Bemidji State. The Vikings are now
 
Wayne State slipped to 2-6-4 and 2-4-3.
