ST. CLOUD, MN – The University of Mary struck for two goals in the span of 77 seconds to carry the Marauders to a 2-2 draw on the road at St. Cloud State University in the opening game of the Northern Sun season.
Following a scoreless opening half, the homestanding Huskies struck first when Jenna Dominguez scored an unassisted goal just 17 seconds into the second half.
The Marauders found the equalizer at 55:53 when freshman
Kendra Park found the lower left side of the net off an assist by fellow first year player
Brianna Ramey. It is Park's second counter of the season.
UMary stunned St. Cloud State with a second goal just 77 seconds later. Using a helper from
Kayla Alcott, All-Northern Sun forward
Hannah Richter followed in Parks footsteps and beat the Huskies goalkeeper to the lower left side, providing the Marauders a 2-1 advantage.
The Marauders kept pressing their advantage and fired off three more shots in the next three minutes – including two on frame - in hopes of doubling their lead. SCSU weathered the UMary attack and instead countered with the home team's second goal of the game when Nicole Friis scored unassisted in the 61
st minute to knot the game at 2-2.
Now the Huskies had the momentum and proceeded to launch eight shots towards the Marauders goal while UMary managed just one in the final 30 minutes of regulation. Marauders all-conference goaltender
Madisyn Waltman proved equal to the task of keeping the game deadlocked as she turned away the three attempts the Huskies placed on frame to send the game to overtime.
Waltman continued to play big in overtime, making four saves on six shots by the Huskies while UMary was held without a shot in the two extra sessions. The junior goalkeeper finished the contest with nine total saves.
The Huskies held the advantage in shots (22-9), shots on frame (11-4) and corner kicks (4-0) while UMary (1-1-2/0-0-1 NSIC) was whistled for 13 fouls to seven for SCSU (0-2-1/0-0-1).
The Marauders close out the opening NSIC weekend at the University of Minnesota Duluth on Sunday, Sept. 19, at 12 noon.
