BISMARCK, ND – Playing at home for the first time in 518 days, the University of Mary women's soccer team put on an impressive show in a 2-1 victory over visiting MSU Moorhead. In control of the match for all 90 minutes, the Marauders controlled the run of play throughout a masterful Senior Day performance.
Defensively UMary limited MSUM to just two shots in the game, with both coming in the second half. Offensively the Marauders launched 21 shots in the game, including 12 on target.
Scoreless much of the first period, the Marauders broke through in the 41
st minute of play. After
Hannah Richter knocked a shot off the cross bar that landed right on the goal line but refused to bounce in,
Maureen Sullivan hammered home the loose ball into the left side of the net to send UMary into intermission with a 1-0 lead.
The Marauders doubled their advantage less than seven minutes into the second half off a set piece. Richter served a corner kick from the left side of the field across the face of the goal.
Samantha Guzman appeared to direct the ball to
Yasmina Dokara stationed at the right post. Dokara pounced quickly, knocking home her team-high third counter of the season at 51:35.
UMary's defense continued to turn away any MSUM attempts at creating scoring opportunities until the final minute of play when Jayln Bauer tapped home a pass from Carlyjo Gamrath to spoil the Marauders shutout bid.
In addition to a 21-2 edge in shots and a 12-1 advantage in shots on net, the Marauders had five corner kicks to zero for the Dragons.
Before the game, the Marauders honored six seniors, with special emphasis on Snaedis Daniesdottir and Samantha Rosencranz, both of whom will graduate and not compete for UMary in the fall.
Forced to play a limited schedule this year after the pandemic wiped out the traditional fall season, the Marauders play their second and final home game of the spring and their 5
th overall when Northern State University visits on Saturday, April 10. Game time is 7 pm.
