Marauders swept by the Mustangs despite a strong offensive performance

MARSHALL, MN – Despite scoring 17 runs in two games the University of Mary softball team was swept in their doubleheader against Southwest Minnesota State University.

GAME 1 Southwest Minnesota State University 9 University of Mary 8

UMary grabbed an early lead in the top of the second inning after Kaylee Kannegiesser reached on an error by the shortstop which scored Eryn De Jonge. Mikaela Pelesauma added to the Marauders lead when she singled to left as Morgan Diedrich came home to score. SMSU tied the game up in the bottom of the second as the Mustangs scored two.

The Marauders took a 7-2 lead after the top of the third inning. Devyn Ritz got the scoring started after she hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Kaitlyn Alvarado. Diedrich followed Ritz by hitting a double which scored Madelynn Trout. Mariah Sanchez the reached on an error as De Jonge would come across to score. Pelesauma added two more runs as she hit a double which scored Sanchez and Diedrich.

SMSU rallied as they scored one run in the third inning two runs in the fifth which made the score 7-5 in favor UMary. Ritz gave the Marauders an insurance run as she drove in Trout after singling up the middle.

PIVOT POINT

The Mustangs tied the game in the sixth inning as SMSU scored three runs, making the score 8-8. The game remained tied after the seventh which took the game into extra innings. The Mustangs walked the game off the bottom of the eighth inning, earning SMSU a 9-8 victory.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

·       Mikaela Pelesauma went 2-for-5 with three RBIs

·       Eryn De Jonge went 3-for-5 with two runs scored'

·       Devyn Ritz went 2-for-4 with two RBIs

·       Alissa Alvarado pitched five innings and allowed only three earned runs while striking out two batters

Madelynn Trout reached base four times as she went 3-for-4 with one walk and two runs scored.

The Marauders offense earned another early lead as UMary lead 3-0 after the first inning. Kaitlyn Alvarado kickstarted the Marauders offense as she doubled down the right-field line to score Mikaela Pelesauma. Madelynn Trout hit her own double down the left-field line to bring home Alvarado. Eryn De Jonge capped off the inning by hitting a single to center which scored Trout. SMSU offense exploded in the second inning as the Mustangs scored seven runs which gave them a 7-3 lead.

UMary cut the lead in half in the top of the third after Morgan Diedrich doubled to center field, scoring Devyn Ritz and Trout. The Mustangs would add on another run in the bottom of the fifth inning which gave SMSU an 8-5 lead.

The Marauders responded in the top of the sixth as Kaylee Kannegiesser doubled to center field which scored Kasidy Chileen. Pelesauma then made it an 8-7 game as she doubled to right-center to score Kannegiesser.

PIVOT POINT

The Mustangs took control of the game as SMSU scored three runs giving them a 9-7 lead. UMary would try to rally late as Chileen singled to right-center scoring D eJonge and Trout. The Marauders would not be able to add any more runs and would fall 11-9.

The Marauders (6-27, 5-15 Northern Sun) return home as UMary will host senior day on Saturday, May 1, at 1 pm as they take on Upper Iowa University. The Marauders will then host Winona State University on Sunday, May 2, starting at 12 pm.
