OWATONNA, MN – The University of Mary tennis continued their winning ways as the Marauders defeated the Southwest Minnesota State University 4-3 after Heidi Jacobson rallied back to win the final set for UMary.
"This is a big win for us as the Mustangs have a solid lineup and competed well against us," UMary Head Coach Vida Saliendra said.
The Marauders (7-3 overall / 7-3 NSIC) won two out of their three doubles matches against the Cougars (6-6/ 6-2). Tasha Dembo and Yusra Hegy came up short in number one doubles, losing 6-4. Kelsey Lajom and Jamie Stoppler were victorious in number two doubles 6-3. Heidi Jacobson and Kali Askvig closed out doubles play by winning 6-2 in number three doubles to earn a critical doubles team point for UMary.
Tasha Dembo fell in number one singles to Maegan Flight 6-3, 6-1.
Yusra Hegy got the Marauders back on track in number two singles as she won 6-3, 6-0 over Courtenay Leonard.
In number three singles Jamie Stoppler put on a great performance as she won over Gwendolen Sior, shutting Sior out in the second set 6-1, 6-0.
In number four singles Kelsey Lajom was defeated by Maja Louisa Harck 2-6, 1-6.
Kali Askvig lost her match to Cora Delich 2-6, 1-6 in number five singles.
Heidi Jacobson clinched the UMary win after she defeated Silvia Poulakidas 1-6, 6-1, 6-4. After losing her first set Jacobson showed great composure to rally back and win the match for the Marauders.
UMary competes in its final regular season match against Minnesota State University – Mankato on Sunday, April 11, in Owatonna, MN, at 8 am.
