TOPEKA, KS – Despite big games for Eryn de Jonge the University of Mary softball team lost both of their games against Emporia State University and Washburn University by one run on day one of the Washburn Invitational. UMary lost 5-4 to ESU and 4-3 to WU.

The Marauders fell behind the Hornets 3-0 after the first inning. UMary began to rally in the top of the second inning after Eryn de Jonge hit a single to the shortstop, scoring Rachael Laetsch. UMary grabbed another run in the top of the fourth inning as Kaylee Kannegiesser singled to right field to score Kasidy Chileen.
After ESU scored a run in the bottom of the fourth inning UMary responded with two runs in the fifth. Kaitlyn Alvarado and Brooke De Jonge came home to score after Laetsch reached on an error, tying the game at 4-4.
PIVOT POINT
The Hornets scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the fifth after Emma Furnish was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Despite Devyn Ritz's single to right in the top of the seventh inning, the Marauders were unable to score and fell to ESU 5-4.

Mariah Sanchez got the Marauders off to a good start after singling to left field to score Levi Luna and give UMary a 1-0 lead. The Ichabods responded in the bottom to the third to tie the game at 1-1.
The Marauders were able to plate two runs in the top of the sixth inning. Kaitlyn Alvarado drew a walk with bases loaded, scoring Kaylee Kannegiesser. Rachael Laetsch followed Alvarado by hitting a single to right field as Sanchez came home to score.
PIVOT POINT
WU scored three unanswered runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. UMary had its first two batters reach in the top of the seventh but were unable to bring them home as the Ichabods held off the Marauders 4-3.
