SIOUX FALLS, SD - A late penalty ended up being costly for the University of Mary women's soccer team as the Marauders fell 3-2 to Augustana University in an exciting back and forth contest.
UMary falls to 7-3-3 and 6-2-2 in the Northern Sun and currently sits in 5
th place in the league. Augustana improves to 8-3-2 overall and 7-1-2 in the NSIC.
"Tough way to end a game, that's for sure. We put in a brilliant game and I'm extremely proud of the team.
Kayla Alcott had such tenacity and grit to win back the ball and deliver the ball to
Taylor Meyrick, who scored a beaut of a goal," said head coach
Sarah Cook.
"Second goal was amazing resilience out of these women to press and dig in, late in the game.
Kaitlyn Schwass did a great job widening out the backline and played a great pass to
Maureen Sullivan, who whipped in a perfect cross for
Hannah Richter, who came up clutch when we needed her," Cook said.
The Vikings kicked off the scoring in the 15
th minute after Morgan Keirstead scored from just outside the box off an assist from Alexis Legg.
Seven minutes later, the Marauders were able to find the equalizer. After
Kayla Alcott intercepted a pass, she laid the ball off for
Taylor Meyrick, who took a tremendous shot from far out that beat Augie goalkeeper.
AU took the lead in the 69
th minute. Grace Douglas stretched out and scored after the Vikings were able to get the ball inside the box.
The Marauders remained resilient and found a way to tie the game up in the 88
th minute.
Maureen Sullivan put a perfect ball in the box and
Hannah Richter got on the end of the ball and put it in the back of the net.
Augustana drew a penalty in the 92
nd minute of overtime. Kelly Kleekamp put the penalty kick in the top left corner out of reach from the outstretched hands of
Madisyn Waltman.
The Marauders ended the game behind the Vikings in shots (18-14), shots on frame (10-7) and corner kicks (4-0).
UMary returns to the MDU Resources Community Bowl as the Marauders host Concordia University, St. Paul on October 22 at 2 pm.
