BISMARCK, ND – Another incredible defensive effort by the University of Mary extended the Marauders unbeaten streak to eight games. Playing their fourth straight game at home, the Marauders played Northern State to a 0-0 scoreless draw on UMary's Parents & Family Day.
Unbeaten in Northern Sun play, the Marauders 8-game streak is the longest in the program's NCAA era, surpassing two six-game streaks from 2007 and 2012.
"Today was a fun game to be a part of, regardless of the score," said UMary head coach
Sarah Cook. "The team defended exceptionally. To only allow NSU to three shots in a game is remarkable. I think in terms of scoring, we generated the opportunities to win the game and I'm proud of their effort to go for it and win. While we weren't able to come out with a victory, getting a tie is a very important result in terms of the league and where we stand.
"I want to thank our wonderful seniors for being incredible leaders, role models, scholar-athletes, and teammates. It was great to celebrate them this weekend. I would also like to thank all the families who came near and far to be here this weekend during family weekend. Your support means so much."
UMary is 7-1-3 overall and 6-0-2 in the Northern Sun. The Marauders, one of three unbeaten teams in the NSIC at the half-way point in the schedule, sit third in the standings with 22 points, just behind Minot State (26) and Bemidji State (24). Northern State is 4-4-2 and 3-3-2.
The Marauders dominated the stat sheet, outshooting the Wolves 11-3 with a 5-0 advantage in shots on frame. UMary also took three out of the four corner kicks in the game while both teams were whistled for nine fouls.
On a day featuring winds approaching 20 mph, the Marauders took three shots in the first to two for the Wolves before cracking of six shots in the second half to zero for Northern State. UMary took the only two shots taken in the first overtime, including a shot on goal by
Emma Davies, while the Wolves misfired on the only attempted shot in the second bonus period.
Hannah Richter paced the Marauders attack with four total shots, including two on goal.
UMary goalkeeper
Madisyn Waltman, while never seriously challenged, kept the Marauders defense organized on the way to earning her 24
th career clean sheet. She is now one shutout away from the team record of 25 by Kristen Werner in the early 2000s.
This was the first time the Marauders have held a team without a shot on goal since October 20, 2019, in a 1-0 win over visiting Sioux Falls. It was the second time during the 2019 UMary held an opponent without a shot on frame.
