BISMARCK, ND – Playing at the McDowell Activity Center for the first time in nearly 11 months,
Trever Kaiser exploded for a career-high 23 points to lead the University of Mary in scoring in the Marauders home debut. Despite a barrage of treys from Kaiser and his teammates, UMary was unable to hold off a late charge by St. Cloud State University in an 83-76 road win for the Huskies.
Kaiser connected for a career-high six treys on the night and the Marauders hit on 13 total. The junior guard hit all five of his attempts in the first half and finished 6-of-9 on the night. He also grabbed six rebounds, dished four assists and made two steals.
Overall the Marauders made 13-of-25 from behind the arc and shot 49.1% overall while making 7-of-11 free throws. The Huskies hit just five treys but shot 54.1% from the floor and went 12-of-18 at the line.
Four other Marauders also cracked double figures.
Josh Sipes hit a pair of treys and finished with 14 points. Freshman Treyton chipped in a career-high 12. Both finished 5-of-7 from the floor with three rebounds. Sipes also had four assists.
Wyatt Carr hit a pair of treys and scored 11 points
Matthew Kreklow just missed a double double. The All-NSIC forward was limited to ten points but snared nine rebounds, distributed five assists and swatted away two shots, all team-leading totals.
The Marauders opened the game invincible, hitting their first six shots of the game to claim a 17-2 edge. Kaiser hit four treys, Carr one and Sipes scored on a layup to fuel UMary's fast start. Eventually the Marauders lead grew to as many as 16 points. After Sipes hit a trey in the final minute of play, the Marauders entered intermission leading 47-38.
St. Cloud State slowly chipped away at the Marauders advantage through defensive pressure. Using a 15-2 run, SCSU generated four turnovers to surge from a deficit at 72-65 with nearly six minutes to play to an 80-74 lead and under 1:30 remaining in the game.
Caleb Donaldson led SCSU with 33 points, making 14-of-15 shots in the game. Anthony Roberts added 16.
The last time the Marauders played at the MAC was the 2019-20 home finale on Feb. 15.
The Northern Sun North Division opening weekend for both teams continues with the second of two games between the Marauders (0-3 overall / 0-1 NSIC North) and the Huskies (1-2 / 1-0) on Saturday, Jan. 9, at 4 pm.
