Marauders hopes to move up in standings dashed with loss to visiting Beavers

BISMARCK, ND – The University of Mary men's basketball team's hopes of moving up a slot in the conference standings failed to materialize as the Marauders dropped an 82-53 decision to visiting Bemidji State University. Josh Sipes led UMary with 13 points and Jaylan White added 11 but their efforts couldn't offset a Beavers outside game that connected 16 times on treys.

The Marauders entered the night a game behind the Beavers for fifth place in the NSIC North. UMary now falls two games back of BSU in the standings with three games to play in the regular season. The Marauders are 11-14 overall and 6-13 in the Northern Sun. The Beavers are 11-12 and 8-11.

Sipes came off the bench and gave the Marauders an instant spark. The redshirt freshman hit his first five shots of the night, including three treys. He finished 5-for-7 overall and 3-of-4 on 3s.

White, who surpassed 1,000 career points in his last outing, added five rebounds to his 11 points. He was 5-of-6 at the line and drew five fouls on the night while only collecting two. No other player was fouled more than three times in the game.

Matthew Kreklow just missed a double double. In addition to making four blocks, he scored eight points and grabbed nine rebounds. Wyatt Carr also scored eight points, making both field goal attempts and all four free throws. He had four rebounds.

Four Beavers hit double figures in points, with Max Bjorklund and Derek Thompson both scoring 16. Bjorklund hit five treys on the night. Nick Wagner made four 3s and scored 14 points. Ja Morgan had 11 points and six assists.

Kreklow scored the first basket of the night but the Beavers scored the next five points to take a lead they would maintain the rest of the game.

BSU hit 16 treys in 29 attempts and shot 45 percent overall from the field. UMary made 37 percent of its shots, including a 3-for-15 effort behind the arc. The Marauders did knock down 14-of-16 free throws.

The Marauders honor seniors Evan Anderson, Johnnie Turner and Jaylan White in their final home game of the season on Saturday, Feb. 15, when the University of Minnesota Crookston visits the McDowell Activity Center. Tip off is set for 5:30 pm.
