Marauders Wrap Up Regular Season Home Schedule With Games Against Beavers, Golden Eagles

THIS WEEK
The University of Mary women's basketball team will play their final two regular season games of the year inside the McDowell Activity Center this weekend. With only four games remaining on the schedule, the Marauders will host Bemidji State and Minnesota Crookston this weekend. UMary will battle the Beavers on Friday, February 14 at 5:30 PM. The Marauders and Golden Eagles will tipoff at 3:30 PM on Saturday, February 15. UMary will honor their seniors on Saturday!
 
LAST TIME OUT
The last time the Marauders took the court was for two dominant wins inside the MAC. UMary began the weekend by rolling past Upper Iowa by a score of 77-61. Lauren Rotunda led the way with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Askvig, Gillette, Voit, and Hearn all posted double digit points on the game as well. The Marauders followed that up with a 17-point win over Winona State, 82-65. Lauren Rotunda once again led the way with 24 points. Cassie Askvig had 17 points and 10 rebounds with Gillette pitching in 15 and Voit adding 11.

 
THE RECORD
The Marauders come into the weekend with a 17-10 record, starting the season 11-7 in NSIC play.
 
OPPO RESEARCH – BEMIDJI STATE
Bemidji State comes into the weekend with a 7-15 record, going 4-14 in NSIC play so far. Trinity Myer leads the team with 14.0 PPG. Taylor Bray is second with 9.8 PPG, right behind her is Brooklyn Bachmann at 9.7 PPG. The same trio of athletes are the top three rebounders on the team as well.


LAST MATCHUP
UMary claimed a 76-70 lead when these two teams met earlier this year. BSU was able to outscore the Marauders by 16 in the first quarter but UMary held the advantage for the final three quarters, chipping away at the lead. UMary outscored the Beavers 63-41 in the last three quarters of play. Lauren Rotunda (30) and Lexie Schneider (18) both posted their career highs during the game.


HISTORY LESSON
The Beavers and Marauders began their all-time series Nov. 30, 1984, an 80-75 win by BSU, before taking a 22-year break between meetings… UMary leads the series 22-5, and has won nine of ten against BSU.
 
OPPO RESEARCH – MINNESOTA CROOKSTON 
 Minnesota Crookston comes into the weekend with a 4-18 record, going 3-15 against Northern Sun opponents. UMC is led by Abby Guidinger who averages 9.5 PPG. Bren Fox leads the team in rebounding with 6.6 RPG.

LAST MATCHUP
The Marauders took down the Golden Eagles 77-73 earlier this season. UMary trailed heading into the fourth quarter but a strong showing in the final period pushed the Marauders past UMC. Cassie Askvig led the way with 24 points and six rebounds. Lauren Rotunda pitched in 16 points, and six rebounds with Macy Williams adding 12.

HISTORY LESSON
The Marauders are 19-8 against the Golden Eagles since UMary joined the Northern Sun in the 2006-07 season… UMary is 8-5 at home and 11-3 on the road vs. UMC… The Marauders swept the 2018-19 season series.
 
SENIOR SALUTE
Saturday will be the last regular season home game for two University of Mary seniors. Cassie Askvig and Christal Hearn will be honored.
 
Hearn's senior season has been her most productive of her career, posting season highs for her career in points, rebounds, blocks, and steals. Hearn comes into the weekend with 259 career points, 221 rebounds, 100 assists, and 82 steals.
 
Cassie Askvig finished her Marauders career as an all-time great. Askvig comes into weekend with 1651 career points, 808 rebounds, and 218 assists. Last season, Askvig became the first Marauder to earn NSIC player of the year honors. Additionally, she earned All-American status.
 
UMary will also honor student coaches Jordyn Jossart and Shea Heidlebaugh who played three seasons with the Marauders before coaching this season.
 
PLAYOFF PICTURE
The Marauders currently hold a half game lead for third place and a three-game lead over fourth in the North. Two more wins this season would clinch them a first-round home playoff game.
  
GETTING BUCKETS
UMary is fourth in the Northern Sun in points per game averaging 74.8. The Marauders have a plus 8.9 points scoring margin over the opponents which is third in the Northern Sun. Cassie Askvig leads the conference in scoring, averaging 21 PPG. Lauren Rotunda ranks 17th at 12.7 PPG. The Marauders lead the conference in field goal percentage (45.8). Askvig ranks fourth in the conference with a field goal percentage of 49.8 percent.
 
A HELPING PASS
The Marauders sure know how to share the ball. The team ranks first in the conference in assists, averaging 16.52 assists per game. Macy Williams is second in the conference averaging 4.1 assists per game. Williams leads in the conference in assists / turnover ratio. Gillette is 20th in the NSIC (2.8/game) and Rotunda is 21st (2.7/game).
 
DEEEE-FENSE
The Marauders allow just 65.9 points/game, eighth lowest in the NSIC. Teams are making 41.1 percent of their shots against UMary, ranking them 12th in the conference in field goal percentage defense.
 
THIEVERY
UMary averages 7.22 steals per game this season, ranking them eighth in the Northern Sun. Christal Hearn leads the team with 1.4 steals a game, ranking tied for 15th in the conference. 
 
DOWNTOWN
Averaging 7.5 treys/game, the Marauders rank third in the NSIC. Shooting 34.8 percent from behind the arc, UMary is fifth in the conference in three point shooting percentage. Coral Gillette is second in the conference averaging 2.5 three pointers per game.
 
CHARITY STRIPE
Shooting 75.6 percent from the free throw line as a team this season the Marauders rank fifth in the NSIC. Lauren Rotunda ranks second in the NSIC, knocking down 91.5 percent of her free throws. In 10th is Cassie Askvig, making 79.6 percent of her shots from the charity stripe.
 
CRASHING THE GLASS
The Marauders rank fifth in the NSIC in rebounding defense and fifth in rebounding margin, outrebounding opponents by 3.7 RPG on average. Lexie Schneider is eighth in the NSIC in rebounding, pulling down 7.5 boards per game. Askvig and Rotunda are right behind her. Rotunda is ninth with 7.4 RPG and Askvig is 11th with 7.1 RPG.
 
MAKING HISTORY
Cassie Askvig just made history! With her 45 point performance against SMSU, Askvig broke the Marauders single game scoring record. She not only broke UMary's single game scoring record but the Northern Sun single game scoring record. She wasn't done breaking records just yet, she tied the Marauders single game record for free throws made with 17 against the Mustangs.
 
NATIONALLY KNOWN
Cassie Askvig, Macy Williams, and Lauren Rotunda aren't just at the top of the NSIC statistics rankings but they both have found a place amongst the best in NCAA Division II.
Cassie Askvig is second in the nation in field goals made and in 14th in points per game
Lauren Rotunda is seventh in the nation in free throw percentage
Macy Williams ranks 22nd in total assists and 34th nationally in assist to turnover ratio
 
NSIC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
The Marauders have had two athletes earn NSIC athlete of the week honors.
 Lauren Rotunda has earned the honor three times. She first earned the honor for her 19 point, eight rebound, six assist performance against Minot State during a dominant 81-60 win. Later on, she would repeat as NSIC North Player of the Week for her 23 PPG, 6 RPG, and 2 APG weekend in a pair of wins over UMC and BSU. She earned the honor for the third time for her 20.5 PPG and 8.5 RPG weekend with wins coming against UIU and WSU.
Cassie Askvig earned hers after averaging 34 PPG and 5.5 RPG.

CLIMBING THE MARAUDERS ALL TIME RANKINGS
Cassie Askvig currently has 1,651 career points and 808 career rebounds. She ranks seventh all-time in points and fifth all-time in rebounds. She also sits sixth all-time in career blocks with 69.
Lauren Rotunda moves into fourth all-time in career steals with 116.
Macy Williams climbs to 13th all-time in career assists with 271.

With the teams win over the Northeastern State Riverhawks the Marauders now have 700 all-time program wins!
  
 
LIVING UP TO EXPECTATIONS
Coming into the season as defending NSIC player of the year the expectations are high for senior Cassie Askvig and she is living up to those expectations. The Marauders senior is averaging 21 PPG and 7.2 RPG throughout this season.
